Yesterday, it was confirmed that another of our exciting young talents has put pen-to-paper to extend his stay with Luton Town.

Announced by the Official Site Nathan Jones confirmed that 22-year-old Dion Pereira had signed a contract extension.

Since arriving at Kenilworth Road, Pereira has made exceptional progress.

Joining as a member of the development squad, his performances saw him earn a place in the main squad and the striker made his debut, for the Hatters, in the last game of last season against Queens Park Rangers.

Talking to the media and as reported by our referenced source, Nathan has had this to say about the youngster:

“Dion’s done really well since he came in. He did well with the development squad and towards the end of last season, did enough to warrant the fact that he would be with the first team.

“The more he trains with us, the better he gets, so we’ve been delighted with him in pre-season. What he needs now is real testing, so we are hoping that we can get him that game time this season so he can further his development.”

All augers well for young Dion but what are we to read in the last sentence of Nathan’s quote.

Has Dion improve enough to warrant a permanent place in the first-team this season or is he destined to be sent out on loan.

The danger of Dion remaining with the first team squad is that he may not get much match time, especially with the likes of Elijah Adebayo, Cameron Jerome and Carlos Mendes Gomes, to name but three, vying for a place in the starting eleven.

My view is that he should be sent out on loan but only for the first half of the season, until the January transfer window. If Luton can find a club that will give him that much needed game time and at the level of football he needs, his progress can be monitored.

If he exceeds expectations then he could be used, by Luton, in the second half of the season, if he remains a work in progress, I am sure it would not be too hard to find another club to loan him to for the remainder of the season.

Is that a plan that gets your nod of approval?
