Luton – Something From The Weekend Sir

It was, as it turned out quite an interesting weekend sports wise.

A predicted boring Monaco Grand Prix turned into an exciting race, Real Madrid won the Champions League, Nottingham Forest got promoted to the op-flight of English football, Kal Naismith decided that Bristol City were a better option than Luton Town and Saint Etienne were relegated from the topflight of French football.

But why the mention of Saint Etienne you may ask?

Well, it seems the unpleasant scenes we’ve recently witnessed in English football, namely pitch invasions, have spread to France.

Following their relegation, after a penalty shoot-out, the St Etienne fans staged a full-scale riot on the pitch, something far worse than we’ve recently witnessed in this country.

I also thought the riot would need me nicely into revealing the results of a recent poll whereby we asked you to decide what the answer to stop these recent pitch invasions would be.

With four options to choose from:

• Issue Fines
• Issue Bans
• Play Behind Closed Doors
• Deduct Points

we had a clear winner with 54% going for the points deduction, followed by issue bans 20%, play behind closed doors 19% and issue fines bringing up the rear with 7%.

I guess we all have our thoughts on the subject matter, and some may be saying, in the case of Saint Etienne, a points deduction wouldn’t work as they had already been relegated, my answer would be for them to start next season with a hefty points deduction next season.

But the spectre of crowd unrest also reared its ugly head in Paris with a commotion relating to numerous Liverpool fans being refused entry, even with tickets that were not fake, resulting in the French police opting to use tear gas / pepper spray.

Now I’m not going to apportion blame, I’m sure the authorities will do their utmost to dissect the problems that occurred in their own peculiar manner.

Sadly though, it seems that since supporters were allowed to return to stadia, following the pandemic, a lot of what we had previously learned has gone out of the window, hooliganism is making a comeback, time for a clampdown methinks.
