Luton – RIP Peter Quince

Those who attended the game on Saturday against Blackburn Rovers and who purchased a Match Day programme, may have seen the obituary for Peter Quince.

Peter Quince was my uncle, my late mother’s brother and one of the nicest gentleman I met.

His sense of humour always made me laugh and, as youngsters, we often visited his family home where, my brother and I, would play with our three cousins, Tony, Trevor and Carol, often kicking a ball around in the back garden.

Their family was much like ours and, on thinking back, there is one very familiar link – Luton Town FC.

As you may have read, in the obituary, Peter was a long time Luton supporter, the same as my own father.

In fact, Trevor and myself owe it to our dads for our love of football, both being introduced to the delights Kenilworth Road held.

It was an indoctrination that has stood the test of time and I’m sure, like myself, Trevor can remember making his way to the quaint old ground with his dad.

But, as time passed and we both got older, we’d venture to the football as separate individuals, joining the throng of teenage lads who flocked to the ground.

Sadly, my own father passed away some 16 years ago and, due to circumstances, had long given up on attending match days on a regular basis.

But Peter didn’t, he persevered through the bad times, enjoyed the good times and made his own pilgrimage to Kenilworth Road at every available opportunity.

Sadly, in his latter years, Peter was badly affected by Dementia and spent the last years of his life in a care home.

I know exactly how his family felt as my own mother was also affected by this dreadful illness where the afflicted can remember forty, fifty years ago but cannot recognise their own children.

Peter’s funeral isn’t for a couple of weeks, but although I have some kind of phobia when it comes to funerals, I’m definitely attending this one, to pay my respects to not only the best uncle I had but also one of life’s true gentleman.

RIP – Peter Quince, a loyal Hatter who will be sadly missed by his family and friends.
