Luton – Promotion Is Not For Us Yet

Earlier today, in an article, I covered the recent poll relating to Luton Town achieving a top-ten finish as the season approaches its end.

Our article – luton-you-believe-it-is-on-the-cards – covered the inference that you thought it was possible.

However, our recent run of form, where Luton have taken 9 points from a possible 15, seems to have resurrected the possibility of gate-crashing the play-offs.

Indeed, it is something that our very own Pelly Ruddock-Mpanzu has spoken about, as reported by Luton Today, with Pelly having remarked about the international break and what lies ahead:

“We’ll have a break and then hopefully we come back fighting fit and it’s going to be a big couple of games left.

“Let’s see what we can do, the play-offs are not out of reach for us, if we get a run together, we can make that.”

Now there is nothing I would like more than to see, after our plunge into non-league football, Luton Town back in the top-flight of English football again, but now is not the time.

I will explain why I am of that opinion.

Making the play-offs could put the Hatters in a situation where, on the day, they not only reach the play-off final at Wembley, but win it, football has a history of producing the unexpected when it comes to results.

Therefore, if the Hatters were to win the play-off final, it could, I believe, herald a false dawn.

Currently, we are in no position to compete in the Premier League, our ground is not supportive of football at that level, our team would struggle, and the season would become a nightmare.

To even contemplate surviving at this level, the club would have to bring in some fresh talent, probably at great expense, but it would still be no guarantee of survival as many other promoted clubs have discovered.

Indeed, relegation could see our better players leave, the club having to restructure financially and start a slippery slide back down the divisions.

Surely, it is better to bide our time, consolidate in the Championship, get Power Court completed, move up the financial ladder and then strike out for the big time.

It may not be what everybody wants to hear, or read, but patience is the name of the game, we have come so far in such a short space of time, let us be grateful for what we have achieved as opposed to hankering over an instant dream that could sacrifice our very existence.

Promotion in not a option at the moment we need to consolidate our position in the championship, be in a strong financial position that allows as to become a top premier league side with top facilities to play on

Absolutely perfect analysis…..we are not ready for the top flight, it would be too much too soon !!!!

We need a lot of money to stand any chance of staying in the Premiership over the next few years, and I believe it could destroy this fantastic old club by getting there too quickly. The FA, Premier League and TV need to share out the money in a better way, and give more clubs a chance. It is happening slowly at the top of the premiership and it is becoming a little more spread out, with more clubs having time at the top than previously.
Just consolidate, grow steadily and improve over the next few years to have a really solid base, a central line of strength in the team and organisation.

I really do hope Luton would go up, but scoring only 31 goals in 38 games so far this season I think it is very very unlikely. If a team is to survive in the Premiership it has to be a lot more attack oriented

Promotion would be disastrous for Luton now. As someone who witnessed Ron Baynham, Sid Owen,Gordon Turner et al I saw them move from Div 3 South to Div 1 when money wasn’t all that mattered. Today we should be pleased thay have reached 50 points as they should be safe as that had to be their target this season. Two or three seasons securing a mid-table position is all they can hope for until they can build a stronger financial base. Unless some lunatic comes along with more money than sense we should be pleased with what we have

Good post! I love the Kenny but 11k capacity is a glass ceiling for any real progress in status. The new stadium is essential for the next step. I stood on the Oak Rd terraces & watched Frenchie score “that” goal against Mansfield… we had 20k gates in those days … we need that now! Consolidate first, get the new stadium & then push on. Luton the ultimate yo yo team – on a long bit of string!

  • Tony P says:

Only 20k. I stood on the terraces along with 30068 others to watch the Blackpool Cup Match. It was a bit tight

    • David Powell says:

20k average …. I was at school when the Blackpool game was played, sadly.

The catchment area is there if we had a decent stadium… a successful Luton team in the Premiership would average 30k plus …

The Kenny is charming in its own way but, it is holding us back.

good to see supporters thinking about finance.football is a business, and like any business it must be a viable ,money making concern.too many supporters still think its just a game. enough of the boring stuff, remember mac donald, harford, howard,i hope that adebayo will step into there boots and become a top striker, and strike fear into the opposition. for me collins cant do that,he woukd make a great aquisition for another team. and unless ruddock stops giving the ball away, and a goal being scored, then move him on. they have gone stale?
