Luton – Man Down And White Lines

I am guessing that, like myself, many of you were introduced to the delights of Luton Town Football Club by their father.

My own father started taking me to Kenilworth Road back in 1967, yes, I am getting on a bit, when we used to queue up to get into the Bobbers Stand.

I used to crawl under the turnstile while my dad slipped the gateman a few pennies to turn a blind eye.

Once in, my dad used to stand on the wooden steps while I made my way down to the front and watched the game peering over the top of the advertising hoardings.

Now, like many of his ilk, my dad had some very forthright views when it came to football and last night, as I sat watching Luton Town slump to a home defeat, against Cardiff City, my mind wandered.

I found myself thinking about how the game was and how it is now, and two things immediately stuck in my mind that I am sure my father would have had a few coarse words to say about.

The first relates to the new fad of when a free kick is awarded, on the edge of the area, one of the side defending the free kick now lies on the ground behind the wall in the event of the whole wall jumping when the kick is taken and the taker scoring with a shot beneath the wall.

The second relates to the use of that white spray the referee carries to mark out where a free kick should be taken from and where the wall should stand.

Both new developments in our game but I am sure more will emerge in the future.

But what are your views on the way the game is constantly evolving?
