Luton – A Familiar Story

Those dreams of getting revenge for the 4-0 thrashing the Hatters suffered, in the reciprocating fixture earlier this season, were dashed by Cardiff last night.

After an indifferent first-half, enlightened only by a smart save from Simon Sluga and a miss from James Collins, Cardiff were to go on to score two quick goals, before the hour mark, to seal the three points on offer, with Harry Wilson and Will Vaulks doing their bit to extend the Welsh sides unbeaten run to six games.

For the Hatters it was a familiar story of failing in the ball retention areas and creating enough chances to score from.

After the game, Nathan Games, as reported by The BBC had this to say:

“They’re a tough side to play against because they’re giants. They put you under pressure but I thought we handled that really well.

“We had the best chance of the first half, James Collins’ header, and when you don’t take that, the first goal is always vital.

“We lost two centre-halves and, especially against these, I picked the biggest, strongest side I could pick – apart from our groundsman, who’s 6ft 4in!

“That set us back and the first goal was vital. Once they had the first goal, they were difficult to break down.”

To me it seemed that Nathan compromised Luton’s style by trying to match the opposition size wise instead of going for the jugular.

As for that first goal, when you manage a side that has only scored 23 goals in 29 matches, scoring more than once is always going to be a struggle, especially when you do not create a plethora of chances.

Never mind, time to get over the defeat and look forward to our next fixture, a trip to take on Stoke City, a side that Nathan will surely want to get a win over.

Normal response after a defeat. Passing was slack, but didnt think they were much better than us. Losing 2 centre halves changed the game. Thought rea had hold of their midfield until he had to switch
But hey ho soon be Saturday.

They had Harry Wilson, on loan from Liverpool, always capable of producing that one moment of magic, as we saw last night, but you are right, they were not much better than us, a typical Mick McCarthy side

Hi mh, well after last night. I think the only player to come out of it was sluga. Thank god for 2 good saves. I see a lot of criticism of naismith on social media but rae was every bit as bad with his passing. Hylton didn’t get any service an when he won a header there was nobody in the space!!! Collins is so low in confidence and its showing badly now. As for the new boys adebayo ran round like a headless chicken an is obviously not up to it yet an Ince while putting a couple of lovely passes to open the defence. Didn’t seem to know where he was meant to be playing. An dewsbury – Hall barely got a corner past the first defender!!!
