Luton – Man Down And White Lines

I am guessing that, like myself, many of you were introduced to the delights of Luton Town Football Club by their father.

My own father started taking me to Kenilworth Road back in 1967, yes, I am getting on a bit, when we used to queue up to get into the Bobbers Stand.

I used to crawl under the turnstile while my dad slipped the gateman a few pennies to turn a blind eye.

Once in, my dad used to stand on the wooden steps while I made my way down to the front and watched the game peering over the top of the advertising hoardings.

Now, like many of his ilk, my dad had some very forthright views when it came to football and last night, as I sat watching Luton Town slump to a home defeat, against Cardiff City, my mind wandered.

I found myself thinking about how the game was and how it is now, and two things immediately stuck in my mind that I am sure my father would have had a few coarse words to say about.

The first relates to the new fad of when a free kick is awarded, on the edge of the area, one of the side defending the free kick now lies on the ground behind the wall in the event of the whole wall jumping when the kick is taken and the taker scoring with a shot beneath the wall.

The second relates to the use of that white spray the referee carries to mark out where a free kick should be taken from and where the wall should stand.

Both new developments in our game but I am sure more will emerge in the future.

But what are your views on the way the game is constantly evolving?

If an attacking player in the wall was to step back and fall over the player laying down, should that be a penalty?
Also I agree with the white line, but it should also be used for throw ins , to stop players stealing 10 yards.

Bad enought tyring to score one, but the way we are playing, I think if the whole opposition lies down, we still wouldn’t score a second goal in play.

Hi, I am starting to get a little bit concerned. I’m feeling we are starting to lose direction & find some of NJ’s selections a little baffling. Also feel he has too many favourites who play week in week out whether they play well or not. We are definitely getting closer now to being sucked in yet again to another relegation battle as teams like Forest & Derby who were a long way adrift of us not that long ago are starting to breathe right down our hatters necks. Think we may need 50+ points to stay up & although it means we may need say another 14 or 15 which doesn’t sound much, it is if you aren’t scoring or can’t hold on to a 1-0 lead & bad habits can be easily formed. I agreed with a comment you made previously MH, why didn’t NJ select a side that could hurt Cardiff not worry too much about their size. If they are big so what, then u play it on the ground & weave around them but also we give the ball away too much. I personally am not that impressed with Naismith & am also wondering if Danny can make the grade now loathe as I am to say it, although I do think he should have been given a longer run in the side earlier, I don’t think he’s had enough time plus the strikers are getting very little service hence the lack of goals.

Dont think its lack of chances, its lack of finishing…

You are most welcome MH & yes Alan I do agree that you have a point too.
