And so, the 2022 Qatar World Cup as drawn to a close and the mainstream media got its wish, a Lionel Messi win.

No doubt the pages of the media will be awash with tributes to Lionel Messi as their fawning over the striker continues.

As for me, I’m a little disheartened, I was hoping France would keep the trophy in Europe.

But in what is being described as the best final in ages, was anybody else dismayed by the way the cynical tackling of the Argentine team, tackling where the man was the target rather than the ball, wasn’t punished severely enough.

Also, although I accept a penalty shoot-out brings drama, I lost count how many times the officials ignored the fact keepers were moving off their line before the ball was struck.

But all-in-all, it was a decent tournament and I’ll not forget that the winners were humbled, in their first game of the competition, by Saudi Arabia.

Now let’s get back to the real game, a home fixture against Norwich City, on Boxing Day, can’t come soon enough.

Morning mh, great game my arse. 80 mins of dross from the French. An the argues continued there awful tactics of 66. Then 40mins of excitement not great at all and don’t get me started on the ref!!! I still believe it was fixed by fifa from the start with refs given conflicting rules from the start and appointments to suit certain games. Notice that the straight refs went home early and even Taylor did not get far.

couldn’t agree more, those first 80 mins were so turgid I was debating whether to have my afternoon power nap until Mbappe scored!

Championship refs, premier refs, FIFA refs… All have been worse than I ever remember. Is it because we have so much coverage these days that we are exposed to the poor decisions, or have the association’s got lax on training with reliance on new technology?
As much as I have enjoyed the WC, it has tempered my enthusiasm for the league season somewhat with the delay… Should be revving with new manager and opportunity to push into play off spots and January window fast approaching… Hope we don’t have to suffer another Winter break any time soon!
