Luton – And So The EFL Championship Play-Off Final Build-Up Begins

This Saturday, the Hatters support will descend upon Wembley for their clubs most important fixture in ages.

Luton Town will go head-to-head with Coventry City for a place in the top-flight of English football, the Premier League, complete with its untold riches.

For the winners it will be like finding the elusive pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, for the losers, well let’s not go there.

With both clubs looking as if their entire ticket allocations will be sold, it promises to be an atmospheric ad memorable afternoon.

But which way will the pendulum swing, will it be a sea of orange celebrating or a sea of sky-blue clad supporters?

Looking back at the EFL Championship fixtures, between the two sides, this season, we find that the game at Kenilworth Road, on 14-September-2022, ended 2-2 with Carlton Morris scoring both of the Luton Town goals.

In the reciprocating fixture, at the Coventry Building Society Arena, on 11-February-2023, it ended 1-1 with our captain, Tom Lockyer, scoring in the first minute.

Clearly, there’s not much between the two sides, apart from the 10 points that separated the two sides in the EFL Championship, with the Hatters finishing 3rd and Coventry City finishing 5th.

But, looking back to the two league games played between the two sides this season and in particular the attendances, we find that 9,546 watched the game at Kenilworth Road and 20,366 watched the reciprocating fixture, clearly a lot more than that combined total will be gracing Wembley Way this coming Saturday.

Earlier, I mentioned there’s not much to choose between the two sides, but is anyone, ahead of the game, prepared to stick their head above the parapet and predict the final score?

Not to damper on Saturday mh,but looking at our 2fixtures against them is very short sighted. Remember at the start of the season Coventry lost what 5 games due to an unfit pitch an turmoil surrounding owners? Just think with a perfect start exactly where might they have finished.like wise if we hadn’t thrown so many points away in draws . Where would we have finished. I think we both deserve to be in the final.while I expect a win losing to them will be less painful than Sunderland or Middlesbrough would have been. But don’t judge on 2games.

I’m a lifelong Coventry fan but came across this article via Newsnow. While I’ll clearly be supporting your opposition on Saturday & praying for the win, at the same I hope it turns out to be a great spectacle & a game that make both sets of supporters proud. Being a football fan most of my life, and an ex-South African to boot, I can well recall the heady days of Luton in the top flight with the Stein brothers among others incl. club legend, Mick Harford, Mike Newell, David Pleat dancing onto the pitch @ the final whistle when Luton beat Man City to stay up (how times have changed for them!!). I can go on & on. Both clubs have been through hell & back and that’s why it makes it even more special. After all, we played against each other in League 2 in 2017/18 when both got promoted. That’s not long ago at all & shows how far both have come in a relatively short time. As for Saturday, it’s a tough one to call – 2 different playing styles & like against M’bro in our semi, it could end up being a moment of magic / mistake that just makes the difference. As the song goes, “que sera sera….” Whatever will be, will be. Win or lose both clubs will live to fight another day, but the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow these days is stuff of dreams. One will revel in the glory, while the other will be inconsolable and disconsolate. PUSB (Play Up Sky Blues)! SBA (Sky Blue Army)!

Morning guys looks like our boys are going to have to break another record to be promoted .as we are the away team. No away team has been promoted from 2003 to 2022 in the play off final.just another statistic to overcome.

  • Steve Cox says:

No problem, our away record is better than our home performance. I believe the Hatters will win a close contest by the odd goal, just like our last final in 2009. COYH
