We are at the time of the season where clubs are looking at their squads and deciding who not to keep next season.

For managers these are difficult times, and an element of ruthlessness must come in to play.

Nathan Jones is probably deep in thought as to how he will re-shape his squad for next season and we may be surprised, or even shocked, as to who he decides to let go and who he decides to keep.

Late last week, perusing the football news, I came across and article, published by London News OnLine, that confirmed that a player who was admired by the Hatters support but who left us last season, Andrew Shinnie, had been released by Charlton Athletic.

To say the news surprised me is an understatement.

Shinnie moved to the Hatters, initially on loan, from Birmingham City in 2017 and played an important part in our climb through the leagues into the Championship.

Unable to get a regular place in the Luton starting XI this season, Shinnie joined Charlton Athletic, on a short-term deal back in February and appeared to have found a new home.

However, a change in the managerial hotseat at The Valley, with Nigel Adkins now in charge, has resulted in the midfielder not being given a new contract.

Our source carries the following remarks attributed to Shinnie which explain his situation:

“My time at Charlton has come to an end. It’s been a privilege to play for such a great club and an opportunity I’ve thoroughly enjoyed.

“I’m happy with my contribution this season and felt I had more to offer, however changes in management didn’t go in my favour. But that’s football and I wish the club all the best going forward.”

Some fine words and here at Vital Luton, we hope that the 31-year-old manages to find, quickly, another club where he can strut his stuff.

Shinnie, like so many others, helped our club climb back to a level in English football we deserve and it would be churlish not to keep tabs on them as we hold them all in high esteem.

Morning mh, I’m confident of seeing shinnie playing in the Scottish Premier league next season for one of the lesser teams an being highly rated. I liked him but felt he was homer. An wasn’t so effective in away games
