Luton – A European Super League

Well, well, well, the announcement that broke yesterday evening, relating to a European Super League, has certainly put the cat among the pigeons!

The announcement has not been accepted with glee by a huge swathe of football supporters, but when did our opinion ever really count when it comes to the so-called elite clubs foraging their own paths?

The game, in the past few decades, has moved away from belonging to the working man it is now a financial driven entity.

Personally, the announcement did not come as too much of a surprise to me, the formation of a European Super League has been something that has been discussed for numerous years, sort of bubbling under the surface ready to break through.

Naturally, arguments are entering the arena relating to the financial aspect, the closed shop aspect, and the destruction of football as we know it.

But can you really blame any of the Premier League clubs Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal or Spurs, from signing up?

After all, was the formation of the Premier League, back in the 1990’s, to far removed from what is happening now?

Already those who govern our sport presently, have intimated the so-called big-six will not be allowed to play in the Premier League and that participating players will be barred from international football.

But will that put them off?

I doubt it, money rules now and, after all, how many times do players withdraw from international football through minor injuries or even retire to prolong a club career.

If the European Super League does get off the ground, I wonder what will happen to the remainder of domestic football.

Will it flourish or as I fear, will it become second rate, brushed aside by the huge amount of cash the European Super League will generate?

Playing football during this pandemic, to me, sowed the seeds of this latest plan, clubs have realised that TV money dominates and cash through the turnstiles is almost now a secondary revenue stream.

But what are your views on the so-called European Super League?
