Luton – A 16-Year Wait And For What?

|
Image for Luton – A 16-Year Wait And For What?

We’ve all waited so long, 16 years, to be precise, to be able to stand on the terraces and watch Luton Town take on Watford.

Ahead of the game, hopes were high that the Hatters could extend their unbeaten run and climb further up the Championship table.

Never in my wildest dreams did I expect us to be given a going over on the scale we were.

In one single game we conceded more goal away from home than we have all season and those hopes of extending that unbeaten run were smashed to bits.

I can take defeat, but it is the manner of the defeat, yesterday, that galls me the most, will it be a mortal blow to our season or will, in true Luton Town form, will we bounce back?

Naturally, social media is alive with comments relating to the biggest defeat Watford have ever handed out to us:

Hopefully, we can bounce back, on Saturday, when we welcome Sunderland to Kenilworth Road, but I sense there is going to have to be some hard work put in on the training ground this week!

No point in worrying about it. It’s dead now. I can understand those who left us there way before full time. We stayed though and fortunately there was only one guy going over the top. The rest of us had a wee clap.

Shit happens. We’ve had humpings every season in this division. And we’re still here going strong.

I wouldn’t pin it all on illness though. If we are to avoid a repeat Jones has to consider if there are lessons to learn. For me, the moment I saw Bell as centre back I knew the game was gone. He’s never played there for us. Bree was in the team and he has played there several times. Bell had no positional awareness in the role. But Jones shouldn’t have put him there. The other was Freeman. He hasn’t looked all season like he can play in a 3 man midfield when we’re in a scrap chasing the ball. Off the ball we played with a 2 man midfield and got totally outclassed and overrun. Freeman is better suited to the 3 man midfield when we expect a lot of possession. Leave him for that. Could have had Osho in front of the back 3 with Clark and Campbell so we’d have had more stability.

But look, the much much better side on the day rightly thumped us. No worries. Accept it, move on. Norwich away was a great night out. And QPR was a great home win. Remember those instead and build on them.

Totally agree with you 100% and a really good summary of the situation – I am nervous about Sonny Bradley too he seems way off the pace these days.

Morning mh, for me that was the most important game of the season. I know I can go over the top but that was awful. Alan felt I should just get over it as its 1 game but for me it ruins my season even if we got promoted it haunts me. An Saturday is the second most important game for me Sunderland if we lost that well. I feel sure we will give them a reaction to the scum score I live in hope.

NJ chose the wrong team from the start – as soon as I saw the team sheet I knew NJ would be making excuses when we lost – I predicted 5-0 to Watford so lost my money too – NJ has to really think about Sonny be in the starting 11 – the guy has made so many mistakes this season and was yards behind Watfords attackers – maybe he is still sick or has personal problems but something is not quite right – Watford seemed to have recovered from their previous setbacks and look as if they will climb to the top now

Players were poor yesterday defence has been are achilles this season but i do think this was just a blip you get up and downs in football i was as disappointed as every other fan was. Still in a great position to be in the mix come season end its hard to take defeats especially when its are local rivals Saturday will be different im sure

Hello MH Like everyone I could not understand the team selection. However it now appears there was severe sickness in the team before the kick off necessitating the team selection.

However we should never have made such poor defensive decisions during the game. With Potts and Landsbury in the team the result would have been different.

OK the goalkeeper made a serious mistake but let’s remember his great games before, roll on Sunderland .

agree with peter, bradleys time at luton is coming to an end. to many mistakes, and to slow. has done a great job, but ! .lets hope a homegrown replacement is used.COYH.

Well the result has cost me a breakfast at a well known hostelry in Dunstable. I will also suffer the humiliation of my adversery wearing Watford colours but the end of the world as it seems for some it is not. It seems the only redemption for some is that we beat them at home and get promoted, so players and staff that’s the challenge, are you up for it?? COYH

  • Andrew says:

We are disappointed with the result but we are still up there and at the end of the day just one game the biggest I agree . Bell has to go as well as Bradley he never crosses the ball or never gets past the first man , all goals against seem to come from his side . But it was a poor team showing nothing went right for us . Coyh

  • Alan says:

The 1st goal came from bree giving to much space for the cross. The 2nd came from the right again….The third was a keeper trying to be clever. The fourth was on the right hand side too….goals all coming from bells side??????? Many were saying how well sonny had been playing since he came back…..guess its scapegoat time….

    • Steve Bahrain says:

Have said all season how underrated Bell’s defensive work when wing back has been, only behind Campbell and Morris as top consistent performer for me Alan. Although I’m still not convinced with him tucked inside, naturally tries to get up too much and leaves a lot of space and problems.
Sonny hasn’t looked right since his absence, but he is Captain for a reason and will come good again.
Thorpe not getting minutes at Burton, new manager doesn’t seem to fancy him, surely would be better training with our first team and facilities?

  • jimbo says:

hope this sickness bug is sorted, difficult to get rid of. lucky we have a week to recover. i am sure the players will want to show the fans what they are capable of against sunderland. we know how difficult the championship is, and need to expect some off days. stay positive.COYH.

  • Alan says:

Michael Hector (Centre half) training with us today…

  • Chris winter says:

So lyle Taylor could be on the move in Jan from forest. Luton said to be interested along with others. Is this likely I say no. Hector joining us Could work very well he’s different an good both in defence an carrying the ball forward my only issue is how long before he’s fit enough to be considered. But with world Cup due an a mini preseason maybe quicker than snods was.
