The Hatters moved up to third place in the BSB Premier with an emphatic 5-1 win over the early conference leaders, Gateshead.

Gary Brabin restored Keane and Fleetwood to the starting eleven as over 6,000 expectant Hatters fans welcomed their heroes onto the pitch.

Matters didn`t get off to a good start though. With only twelve minutes gone, Luton lost Morgan-smith through an injury with Aaron O`Connor coming on to replace him.

Pushing forward it took Luton thirty-four minutes to open the scoring when Jake Howells drilled home a fine shot from outside the area.

Howells doubled the lead on the stroke of half time, courtesy of an O`Connor assist when he drilled home a second goal from the edge of the area.

Two goals to the good at half time, Luton were keen to eliminate any chance of the repeat of the dramatic comeback by Ebbsfleet in midweek.

However, with seventy minutes on the clock, it was O`Connor that put the game behind Gateshead with Luton`s third goal. It came after Kissock delivered a cross into the box and O`Connor was able to head home from close range.

Gateshead reduced the arrears seven minutes later through Jon Shaw after an assist from Brittain but that three goal cushion was, thankfully, restored when Jamie Hand, on as a substitute for O`Connor, scored the first of a brace, Hand finishing impeccably after an assist from Fleetwood.

Deep into stoppage time, Hand got his second of the game when he made if five for the Hatters in what turned out to be a decent afternoon`s entertainment.

Next up Wrexham in what should be a game and a half and a good indication of whether we really are in the race to get back into the Football League.
