The late, late show returned to Kenilworth Road yesterday.
With the punters starting to drift away, believing the game was going to end 0-0, Alex Lawless struck in the last four minutes of normal time to give the Hatters a vital three points as they push for promotion.
In fact, it turned out to be a good day for Luton with most of our promotion rivals dropping points and The Hatters closed the gap between them Newport at the top.
Unfortunately, although the game eventually saw Luton pick up the three points it has to be said that, at time, it was a lacklustre performance and the home support, towards the thirty minute mark, started to turn on the team.
Matters weren`t helped by the changeable conditions that saw the game engulfed by a heavy storm during some parts, but what about the action?
Luton, as you`d expect, enjoyed the lions-share of possession in the first half but couldn`t create any clear-cut chances with what could be termed half-chances falling to Scott Rendell (back in the side after injury) and Ronnie Henry.
Perhaps what could be classed as the first real effort of the game came from Andre Gray, but his enterprise was only rewarded with an effort that flew past the post. As the half progressed O`Donnell tested the keeper before Shaw went very close just failing to get on the end of a probing cross from Rowe-Turner.
The half ended with Gary sending a cross into the box that struck the knee of Rendell and went wide and the Hatters trudged off to a far from receptive crowd.
The second half saw Luton again dominate possession but the lack of a cutting edge frustrated the Kenilworth Road crowd and the crowd were starting to get impatient. Sensing that was the case, Nuneaton started to give a decent account of themselves with Henry forced into a good rearguard action.
But just as you thought it would end 0-0, up stepped Alex Lawless. His first goal, on eighty-six minutes, saw the keeper beaten all end sup from twenty-five yards out and in the last minute of normal time he was on hand to convert a cross from Howells, just as the cheering to celebrate the first strike had died down.
