Luton reached the last eight of the competition that most seem to be ignoring with a battling 2-1 win at Kidderminster last night.

At the third time of asking the tie finally got played with Luton fielding a relatively strong side.

The Hatters did the early pressing and could have opened the scoring in the 13th minute but Howells saw his shot fly over the bar.

A minute later Tyler produced a fine stop to prevent Kidderminster taking an early lead, keeping out a free-kick from Storer from all of twenty-five yards out.

Just past the midway mark in the half, Luton did manage to get their noses in front with a fine goal. Taylor gave the ball to Fleetwood and the striker eased past Vaughan and into the box. Looking up Fleetwood played the perfect ball into the path of Howells who made no mistake slotting it past Lyness.

Kidderminster almost equalised three minutes later but Blackett did exceptionally well to deflect a goal-bound header from Matt wide.

But in the 35th minute the home side did draw level. The Hatters defence were caught flat-footed as Matt set up Bradley who gave Tyler little chance with his effort.

A minute later Luton had a golden opportunity to retake the lead when Taylor was fouled by Jones, in the box. Unfortunately, for Luton, Lyness produced a great save to deny Fleetwood from the penalty spot.

As the game ebbed and flowed Gittings saw a header cleared off the line before a spell of pressure, from Luton, saw Lyness save well from Fleetwood and then Willmott and Fleetwood drill shots wide.

But, right on the stroke of half time, Luton did get their noses in front again. A suicidal back-pass was collected by Fleetwood who showed his class to go one-on-one with the keeper and make no mistake in finding the net.

The second half produced flashes of action to match the first and Luton were grateful to Tyler who manage dot tip a goal-bound shot from Williams around the post before Lyness, having an impressive game in the Kidderminster goal, saved well from Howells.

As we approached the last ten minutes of the contest, Luton had a glorious chance to wrap the match up but Howells, somehow, headed a Taylor cross wide from an unmarked position.

As the travelling Luton supporters prepared to celebrate victory, there was one last heart in mouth moment when Wright appeared to have put the home side level, in stoppage time, but thankfully the linesman`s flag was raised and Luton were through to the last eight where a home tie with either Gateshead or Alfreton awaits them.
