It Is A 1000 Supporters To Start With For Luton As Spectators Are Allowed Back Into Kenilworth Road

Last week, when the government announced that spectators, in limited numbers, would be allowed to attend sporting events, I, like many others, naturally assumed that Luton Town would have 2000 tickets to distribute ahead of the Championship clash with Norwich City, on Wednesday night.

It prompted me, in a cheeky article – 1999-supporters-to-be-allowed-into-lutons-kenilworth-road-ground – to suggest there could be one less ticket than that!

However, it appears, and quite rightly so, the Hatters have adopted a cautious approach and will start the readmittance of paying spectators by allowing just 1000 into Kenilworth Road for this fixture.

Our CEO, Gary Sweet, as reported by Luton Today, explained:

“We are now in the final stages of being approved by the relevant authorities to enable us to host a pilot event for 1,000 supporters, as we had hoped to do initially in September before trial matches were halted by the Government.

“Although crowds of up to 2,000 are permitted for Tier 2, an initial ceiling of half that number has been set for Wednesday’s match to allow for the complexities of the layout of our much-loved home, with its limited access points, to be safely tested before numbers are increased.

“We would like to formally and sincerely thank those members of the Council’s Safety Advisory Group who, when called upon, pulled out all the stops and worked diligently to ensure that we could be issued with a safety certificate.”

On reflection, it makes sense, the second wave of the pandemic is being closely monitored and every precaution needs to be taken to ensure Luton, as a town, does not drift from being in Tier 2 to a much more restrictive Tier 3, instead we should be making inroads into being placed in Tier 1.

But, for the lucky 1000 who will be watching the Hatters, in the flesh, for the first time since late February, please make some noise and give the lads a boost.
