The Midnight Train To Luton

As well as missing going to Kenilworth Road, during these pandemic driven times, there is also something else I miss, live gigs.

Compiling the following article – played-for-both-luton-and-birmingham-xi -reminded me of a time I had ventured into London, on a Sunday night, to attend a concert.

With the concert finishing late and with it being a rush to catch the last train back to Luton, from St Pancras, I was exhausted as I jumped through the open doors and sat down on the first available seat I could find.

After getting my breath back, I glanced around to familiarise myself with my surroundings, you know the score, toilet location, dodgy looking passengers etc. etc.

One face instantly caught my eye.

But in my confused state, still a little breathless and with my ears still ringing from the sheer volume of the concert I had just attended, I could not, for a moment, put a name to the face, then it dawned on me, it was only MIKE NEWELL.

As the train rattled own the line, cruising through stations such as Hendon and Radlett, I glanced several times in Mike’s direction, hoping he would look back, but he had a vacant look on his face and was staring straight out of the window.

After the train had stopped and then pulled out of St Albans, I had made my mind up to say hello and try and strike up a conversation with the man who, at the time, was the manager at Kenilworth Road.

Unfortunately, it never happened, just as I uttered those words:

“Good Evening”

The train pulled into Harpenden station and Mike stood up and jumped off the train!

I was gutted that I had missed a great opportunity but then it dawned on me, if I had of struck up a conversation, I would not have heard a word he would have said to me courtesy of the continuous ringing in my ears thanks to the barrage of decibels I had endured at the aforementioned gig.

Oh well, such is life!

Have you encountered any Hatters stars, past or present, and struck up a conversation with them?

If so, please feel free to share them with us.
