The Barnsley And Luton Connection

Following up on what could well be the most expensive purchase in the history of our club, Carlton Morris, the Barnsley support have been very vociferous.

Indeed, the Tykes seem quite upset that, following the purchase of Cauley Woodrow, we’ve now raided their club for a second player in Morris, or as some might call it, asset-stripping.

Looking through the social media comments, I must admit that some did make me laugh:

Well, following the events of yesterday (Thursday), he is looking for further opportunities!

But continuing:

You’d best ask Nathan Jones for an answer to that one.

And as for the below:

I’m sure there are a few that could be heading for the Kenilworth Road exit, take your pick.

But as for the most humorous, look no further:

That’ll be a firm no, we’re perfectly happy with those we have.

But all the insinuations, got me researching.

Regular visitors to the site may recall our ‘Played for Both’ articles, reviewing the Barnsley one, the XI I settled on is reproduced below, along with the time lines they completed the criteria for selection:

Goalkeeper – Ben Alnwick (joined Barnsley 5 years after leaving Luton)

Defender – James Bree (started career with Barnsley)
Defender – Paul Futcher (joined Barnsley 6 years after leaving Luton)
Defender – Matty Pearson (joined Luton from Barnsley)
Defender – Martin Cranie (joined Luton 4 years after leaving Barnsley)

Midfielder – Cameron McGeehan (joined Barnsley from Luton)
Midfielder – Jacob Butterfield (joined Luton 7 years after leaving Barnsley)
Midfielder – George Moncur (joined Luton from Barnsley after loan spell at Peterborough)

Striker – Ron Futcher (joined Barnsley 5 years after leaving Luton)
Striker – Kevin Gallen (joined Luton 8 years after leaving Barnsley)
Striker – Trevor Aylott (joined Luton 2 years after leaving Barnsley)

Substitute – David Geddes (joined Barnsley after being on loan at Luton from Aston Villa)

As is often the case, I did omit several who you were quick to remind me were deserving of a mention:

• Elliot Lee – (joined Luton direct from Barnsley)
• Luke Berry – (joined Luton two years after leaving Barnsley)
• Marlon Beresford – (played for Barnsley in between two spells at Luton)
• Danny Wilson – (joined Barnsley 3 years after leaving Luton)

It seems there genuinely is a link between the two clubs, but that link isn’t perhaps as strong as the Barnsley supporters are indicating.

It is uncanny and the Barnsley fans have said this for years now… The Boris comment ribbed me!
Strangely has grown a fondness of Barnsley and their recent journey for me, would love to see them back up next season.

  • Toby Tyke says:

In a game between Luton and Millwall 2 years ago, there were 11 ex Barnsley players in the two squads combined.

Best of luck for the season, you’ve got a good player in Woodrow, and a very good player in Morris.

thanks for the great point, 11 players, that’s gotta be a record. Good luck for next season, would love you to come straight back up.
