Previously, here on Vital Luton Town, I’ve committed to print my feelings on the class of opposition for our pre-season friendly fixtures.
I thought that previously announced away trips to take on the recently promoted sides, Ipswich (at Colchester) and Sheffield Wednesday weren’t that attractive, especially since I had dreams of a European excursion, what with Kenilworth Road closed for refurbishment.
But yesterday, for me, was something of a redemption day with it being announced that the Hatters will journey to the Midlands to take on our fellow Premier League side, Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Last season, the Moulineux based club finshed a respectable 13th in the Premier League table and will provide the Hatters with a stern test.
My view is that early pre-season friendly fixtures are there to introduce new players, work towards full match fitness and try a few different tactical tweeks.
To me, the results are not that important, in a matter of hours they’ll be forgotten.
But stepping up to take on a club that has become aclimatised to Premier League football will be an indication of just were we stand when it comes to our own hopes of retaining our top-flight status for at least another season.
My early prediction is that it’ll end all-square, as we prepare for that first crucial Premier League fixture of the season, away to Brighton and Hove Albion.

Luton Town – One Inherent Danger Of Success For Hatters Defender
Result an tactical analysis are the main theme of friendlies the result doesn’t matter except if it’s a mauling then obviously it’s a tactical error that has to be addressed an quickly. But I’ve some thoughts about what’s been happening pre season. It’s now obvious to me why staying in the prem is so hard for smaller clubs. Recruitment becomes a minefield league clubs inflate fees because you have £170 millions to spend of course we don’t!!!!! An established players want to much in wages. So whilst there are different ways to navigate this I can understand now the clubs path . Sad though it is an we all know how hard it is going to be to survive. We can’t spend 170 millions like forest to survive. And we’ve seen many clubs spend themselves into paupersy an crash down the leagues. So no matter who comes in now. I wouldn’t complain it’s what it is. Get power court built an go again. Though I still believe Brentford worked out the best method of promotion an sustainable premier survival.
we’ve entered a completely different world Chris!
A.s an ipswich fan i would like to play a team more atractive than Luton
As an Ipswich fan, you can’t spell, capitalise nor punctuate.
Figures I suppose.
🙂
Sorry. Not very good with key boards .I thought this was about comments on football not
Grammar.
any friendly is good game time. better get used to little club syndrome? let the players make a statement on the pitch. 3 or 4 years, new stadium. as the ipswich fan said, we all want big teams to play in friendlies. we will have enough big teams to play this season, try and enjoy it. COYH.
Mate you think Ipswich and Wednesday fans care about playing Luton. Just because you’ll be in the PL for 1 season doesn’t mean youre not tinpot.
Ipswich are going on their European friendly tour. Luton will forever have a non league mentality.
I’d be interested in hearing how having a ‘non-league mentality’ has resulted in 3 promotions (from League 2 to PL) in the last 5 years.
Enjoy your Euro tour.
League above you last season, league above you this season… and even if we do go down, will still be a league above you next season.
Enjoy the privilege of playing our Little-Big club before Sunday League kicks off proper hey?!
It clearly screams that Luton are not tinpot. Just because you feel your team was disrespected by a post does not justify your making a foolish remark in response. It merely makes you appear petulant.
Ooh aaaah me tractors broke better get me horse plow out.aaayah gooit a lot booiy.( For those who don’t know this is how they speak down there)
Chong of Birmingham has completed his medical at Luton and I’m expecting to hear he’s signed very soon.
About 1700 hours would be the norm 🙂
Not sure today or tomorrow he had medical so don’t know if anything else needs tidying up first.
Thorpe loaned to Shrewsbury another youngster with no forward path .
Will he ever get a chance? Always looked a little fragile, on the physical side, for me!
if we sign chong, will we go for nakamba as well. what a combination that would be. COYH.
