Newell – second interview? – update

Rumours in Leicester that Mike Newell was due to have a second interview with Leicester City yesterday are gathering pace.

Whether it is wishful thinking on their part or it is true, has yet to emerge. However, their reasoning that Newell?s silence proves that he is interested seems logical. If he did not want the job it would be far easier and better for the fans if he were to come out and say so.

The Luton News have stated tha Mike was believed to have travelled to Leicester to meet a second time with Leicester officials after watching the reserves play at Southend after a first meeting on Monday 30th January.

He is frustrated that a longer contract has not been offered at Luton, but he Luton News also stated that ‘their sources’ suggest that Leicester are ready to offer him the position,but that ‘something big is about to happen’ that may change the course of events.

This would seem to be that an extended contract is about to be offered to Newell. Newell is known to be frustrated at the lack of developments regarding the new stadium and he is said to be concerned about taking over a club just above the relegation zone, as he does not want to go back to square one in League 1 and have to spend time getting back into the Championship. He is also said to like being at Luton and to want to take Luton into the Premiership.

Newell is known to have been interviewed once and has quietly refused to say anymore than that ‘no job has been offered therefore there is nothing to consider’.

Now there are claims on City website Talking Balls (see Central News by Brauny Blue) that a second round of talks are planned with Newell later today.

If so that would fall in line with the City chairman Jim McCahill’s earlier view that interviews would take up all or most of this week.

The manner of Newell’s recent silence would suggest he has been waiting for further contact from City and he is possibly the only outside manager the fans would still approve of right now and in City’s situation.?

Meanwhile Steve Howard has been quoted as saying that the players desperately want him to stay and has urged him not to leave.

Leicester fans have been up in arms over the rumour that Ian Holloway was a potential target, and although neither he, nor the City board have confirmed that, I doubt that either party would risk the ire of the fans.

I predict that Holloway will not feature in the Foxes? plans, and they won?t feature in his, as he seeks new employment, after being told by QPR chairman Gianni Paladini that he will not be asked to continue as the R?s manager.
