Luton – Your Damning Verdict On The State Of Refereeing

One common theme that seems to always appear among social media threads is the poor quality of referee’s Luton tend to get lumbered with.

Although, to be fair, the man in charge at Deepdale last night, Josh Smith, had a better game than many I’ve seen this season.

But following the continual criticism of the man in the middle, I thought it’d be churlish not to put it to the vote with one of our famous polls.

The question asked being:

Are Refereeing Standards On The Decline?

To keep things simple, and to avoid anyone sitting on the proverbial fence, I only offered two options to choose from:

Yes

and

No

The response left me in no doubt as to your views with a staggering 64% going for the YES option with the remaining 32% selecting the NO option.

Quite where those who control the officiating of our game go from here remains to be seen.

I once read an article which implied the game would improve if more ex-players went on to become referees, but with salaries being what they are is there an incentive, even more so if there is a preference to try their hands at coaching / managerial roles.

But, in the original article that carried our poll – referees-the-all-important-question-waiting-for-your-response – one post got me thinking, with the originator inferring he’d rather take referees making mistakes than involve VAR, is that something you agree with?

Please feel free to have your say on the above subject matter in the comment facility beneath this article.

The standard of refing has gone down over the years but today as with all of you have a two trier standard, premiership with var and still can’t get it right and then the old way one ref and two fools on the side line who are not worth having most of the time as they look to the ref for guidance as for the 4th official what is his job just to hold up a board to say how much time is being added. The game has got faster and the poor old ref has trouble seeing everything. So how about not having the 4th official on the side but two refs one in each half to watch what happens betterlike in America football, they start in each half and take control when the ball is in their half so they can Keep up with play just a thought? . what if you get two bad referee’s .that would be twice as bad. what about a substitute ref, and use a clapometer at half time to change the ref. it will never be resolved.COYH.

Clapometer would mean no more ‘ironic’ clapping for finally getting a mundane free kick half way in your own half… The only highlight of any terrible ref scenario.

  • Graham says:

Roger Kirkpatrick. What a ref! Could run backwards at great speed when getting out of the way. Then when he went arse over tit, would bow to the crowd and laugh. Always tough but fair and with a big grin on his face. Those were the days!!!

    • Chris winter says:

Exactly Graham always had the respect of players an fans an common sense. As was Mr Singh his son has followed in his footsteps an is seen on TV .
