Luton v Hendon Preview

Saturday, with Hendon visiting Kenilworth Road in the last of the qualifying rounds, Luton will be hoping that they`re in the draw for the first round proper, a draw which will be carried out on Saturday evening.

The Hatters are unique amongst the occupants of the higher echelons of non-league football in that they have a Wembley pedigree. Aside from our League Cup win over Arsenal, Luton also appeared in the 1959 FA Cup Final, a final they lost, narrowly, to Nottingham Forest.

We`re under no illusions that we can make a trip to Wembley again but the magic of the FA Cup will always stir the emotions. Just thinking back to two recent occasions whereby we`ve reached the semi-finals, against Everton at Villa Park , a game where a strike from Ricky Hill had us all dreaming of a walk up Wembley Way before Everton destroyed those dreams with two goals and against Chelsea at Wembley where after a splendid run up to the semi-final stage our performance never matched our expectation levels, show just how far we`ve fallen in such a short space of time.

To that effect, it`s reassuring that the club have dropped ticket prices to ensure there is a healthy crowd inside Kenilworth Road this Saturday and that Gary Brabin, our manager, intends taking the competition seriously when he`s quoted as having remarked to the local media,

“We`ve had them watched and know about them. They are near the top of their league. We are taking it seriously as we do every game. It`s not a question of putting players out to get a game. The team picked will be more than strong enough to get a victory and players who deserve to be playing in the first team.”

“I`ve certainly got a few little thoughts (on changes). I`m not just going to rest everyone and play anyone who has not been playing.”

“I don`t want to cheapen the competition. It`s a really important competition and important we progress and I will pick a team strong enough for us to progress.”

If we can get past Hendon, and I see no reason why not, it`ll be interesting to see who we are paired with in the draw for the first round proper, I`d imagine there`d be a few League One and Two sides that wouldn`t be too happy at drawing us Hatters.
