On an emotionally charged afternoon, at Kenilworth Road, a gutsy performance from the Hatters ensured they registered their third win of the Premier League season.

Newcastle United were the victims in a game that ebbed and flowed and showed that Luton Town do have what it takes to avoid relegation next May.

Naturally, following the events of last week, with Tom Lockyer lying stricken on the pitch at the Vitality Stadium, it was always going to be an emotional affair.

Credit to everyone involved with the club who organised such a moving accolade, the applause on the fourth minute, the display of all the names of those who helped save Tom’s life and, of course, the wonderful Newcastle supporters who brought a banner, wishing Tom all the best, which they willingly displayed.

Naturally, when Andros Townsend nodded home the winning goal, in the twenty-fifth minute, Tom was always going to feature with Andros rushing to the bench to hold Tom’s shirt aloft.

But it wouldn’t have been a typical Luton Town performance without the usual nervy ending but full credit to the defence who defended resolutely and also to Thomas Kaminsky for producing, as seems to be the norm, a world class save to frustrate the opposition.

However, it shouldn’t have been like that, the Hatters had several chances to kill the game, all of which were spurned but, on the other hand, Ross Barkley was so unlucky to see his thunderbolt crash against the bar, what a goal that would have been if it had snuck under the bar instead of rattling it.

The win still leaves Luton Town lingering in the relegation zone but, with a game in hand and with our recent performances, against some of the best clubs in the land, the belief is there that survival is a realistic aim.

Next stop, Sheffield United (a), on Boxing Day!
