Luton Town – Continuing To Defy The Odds In The Face Of Adversity

And the day has finally come, a day, I’ll admit, I didn’t see again in my lifetime.

Just before 15:00 hours this afternoon, the Hatters, led out by Tom Lockyer, will emerge out of the players tunnel, at the American Express Stadium, to take on Brighton and Hove Albion in a Premier League fixture, yes a Premier League fixture!

After more than three decades away from participating in top-flight football, Luton Town Football Club are back among the big boys.

Sure, it is going to be tough, but it’ll be, for sure, one hell of a rollercoaster ride.

Who’d have thought during that long spell, in non-league football, we’d rise like a phoenix from the ashes to reach the dizzy heights of the cash-laden Premier League, little-old Luton taking on the big guns of English football, the likes of Manchester City, Arsenal, Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea, the list just goes on and on.

Sometimes, relaxing in my favourite armchair, I still can’t believe it, I guess it will take a few games for it to 100% sink in, I still have to keep reminding myself time and time again.

But now we are a Premier League club, we have to manage our expectations, if we are being brutally honest, a successful season will be one in which we finish 17th, just to retain our status as a Premier League side, anything else, despite the huge investment in the squad, will be a wonderful bonus.

Yes, we are going to be on the receiving end of several defeats, some could be heavy, some could be a little demoralising, but we have to keep the faith, 10 wins from our 38 competitive games, plus 7 or 8 draws, would surely be enough to make it a successful season and dumbfound the many football pundits suggesting we are certain to go down.

Over the past decade, our club has grown immensely, our history is littered with tears where wrong decisions have been made and our future has been jeopardised, our current hierarchy have more than steadied the ship, they’ve got it sailing like a golden galleon, something we should all be thankful and proud of.

Rarely are wrong decisions made and I believe, if things go badly wrong, it is essential there are no panic-laden decisions, Rob Edwards is the one to lead us into a fresh era where Kenilworth Road is vacated and we move into Power Court, on no account should he, if things go wrong, be axed.

This morning, I read a post on social media which asked Luton supporters to stand on the Brighton seafront, to take a look at the two piers, one is derelict whilst one is thriving, the derelict one is where Luton Town were, as a club, when we crashed through the painful relegation trap door to flounder in the Conference, the thriving one is where we now, as a club, are now, I’m thankful to the person who posted that comment, I think it sums up our status perfectly.

So, enjoy the season folks, deal with the highs, suffer the lows but never forget we are Luton Town and we’ll continue to do things the correct way, cheer the lads on until your throats are hoarse, never get dejected, never get on the teams back, just remember where we were just over a decade ago and think:

Life isn’t too bad now is it, in fact it is almost perfect!

Great piece MH. Says everything about LTFC. Hope we can continue to confound the critics.

Morning mh, for me the anticipation of looking at a 2inch column at the back of the paper an finding I now have to start at the front for a3inch column is disconcerting 😁 but I’m very excited for 2pm an to see our first premier team.and if I’m honest I will be more emotional at 3pm when the team comes out that it will be better than all the Wembley appearances put together.no matter what happens this season as long as everyone puts in 110% I can’t ask for more.

The first team selection is something I think everyone is anticipating, will Pelly start or will he be an impact sub? How many of the new signings will be in the XI? I guess we can only but wait and see, but a huge day ahead for us.

  • Steve Cox says:

Perfectly put MH. That says it all. Very emotional come 3:00pm.
