This weekend, the Hatters welcome Stoke City to Kenilworth Road, for an EFL Championship fixture.

Ahead of the game, I thought I’d revisit an article first published back in November 2022 – played-for-both-Stoke-city – the reference article produced a ‘They Played For Both’ XI that can be seen below:

Goalkeeper – Harry Isted

Defender – Bryan Small
Defender – Cameron Carter-Vickers
Defender – Matthew Upson
Defender – Rhys Norrington-Davies

Midfield – Ashley Grimes
Midfield – Vincent Hilaire
Midfield – Tom Ince

Striker – Ian Allinson
Striker – Viv Busby
Striker – Mark Stein

Substitute – David Oldfield

Manager – Nathan Jones

There are some very familiar names in the XI and since the article was published, I can’t think of any additions that could be made and, looking in the comment facility beneath the original article, nobody nominated any players that did meet the selection criteria.

However, jimbo did point out that it was a solid defence and that with our current quest for a centre-back not sorted, we could well have done with adding Cameron Carter-Vickers to our squad with the American international now on the books of Celtic.

But, looking elsewhere in the XI, there are other very familiar names, who’ll ever forget Ashley Grimes contribution in the legendary League Cup Final win over Arsenal, at Wembley Stadium or the contribution of Viv Busby, who was the perfect foil for Malcolm MacDonald at Kenilworth Road and also at Newcastle United.

What are your memories of those selected?

Have you a memory or two you’d like to share with us?

If so, simply use our comment facility, beneath this article to enlighten us.
