Luton – That Magical Number Is Within Our Grasp

After the 2-0 home win, against Coventry City on Tuesday evening, ended the Hatters losing streak, I would imagine spirits are high in the camp.

The three points earned on Tuesday evening saw Luton Town hit 47 points, which is a great improvement on the corresponding stage of last season where, with 34 points, we were embroiled in a relegation battle that needed a miraculous last-game win to ensure we retained our Championship status.

This Saturday, the Hatters make the long trek to the north-west to take on Preston North End, a side that sit two places below us in the Championship table and a side who are on a poor run of form.

Preston have lost 7 of their last 11 games and could be there for the taking.

A win on Saturday would see the Hatters hit 50 points, a remarkable achievement considering the struggles of last season.

That number of points would, more-or-less, guarantee at least another season in the second tier of English football, although I cannot see us having such a dramatic drop in form that we could plunge towards the relegation zone.

The 50-point target is also something that the Hatters legend, Mick Harford, spoke about when he entertained the media ahead of the fixture this Saturday.

Harford, as reported by Luton Today had this to say:

“It would be a massive achievement if we get to 50 points before the international break.

“Our aim is to win as many games as we can, to get as many points on the board as we can, aim high and who knows where it will take us.”

Exactly, although a push for a top-six place is, I believe, above us this season, there’s no treason we cannot finish somewhere around 10th.

But, continuing, Harford further added:

“If we can get to 50 points then we can play with that bit of freedom that certain teams do in those times, and who knows what can happen?”

Now that does excite me, casting off the shackles that come with the fear of relegation could see the Hatters play some free-flowing football and start scoring for fun.

But my big question to you is – With relegation avoided, how high can you see Luton Town finishing in the Championship table?

Please feel free to have your say in the comment facility beneath this article, it would be greatly appreciated.
