It Is Third Time Lucky For Luton Striker

On Tuesday evening, when Luton Town were awarded a penalty against Coventry City, was I the only one who was a little surprised when Elijah Adebayo decided he was the man for the job?

I say surprised because delving into the record books it seems that Adebayo had not, before Tuesday evening, scored a penalty in senior football.

The striker, who has been a breath of fresh air since arriving at Kenilworth Road, from Walsall, had taken two in senior football and missed both.

One miss came courtesy of a spot-kick that crashed against the bar when Walsall played Southend in November 2020 whilst the other miss, also for Walsall, saw Adebayo slip as he took the penalty resulting in his effort sailing over the bar, incidentally against Coventry City in September 2019.

But this time around it was 3rd time lucky with Adebayo producing a stuttering run up and then calmly slotting the ball low into the corner of the net with the Coventry keeper not moving.

Shedding some light on why Adebayo was the man to take the spot-kick, Nathan Jones explained, as reported by The Luton Today:

“He practices them, him and James Collins, so we’ve got good penalty takers.”

“They both practice, Elijah was taking them yesterday and was very confident in what he did.”

Now I must admit I am not a fan of the stuttering walk up style but then again, is there nothing that Adebayo cannot do?

Elijah, although only having been a Hatter for a short period of time, is fast becoming a cult hero and I, for one, cannot wait to hear the vocal adulation he will get from a packed Kenilworth Road full of Luton supporters.
