Luton – One Hiccup For Edwards On A Long Journey

If we were going to lose, away to Grimsby in the FA Cup 4th round replay, I expected it to be by the odd goal, not something akin to a rout.

I’d have loved to have been a fly on the dressing room wall when Rob Edwards addressed his players after they’d conceded 3 first half goals.

I’d imagine some harsh words might have been exchanged.

But, although the Hatters salvaged some pride, in the second half, that first half deficit was always going to be our undoing and, as is expected, Edwards had to face the press after the game.

Talking to the BBC the gaffer had this to say:

“It was three very disappointing goals, two from a throw-in and a free-kick, areas that we spoke about in the first game, and we certainly prepared for.

“They were very ruthless in front of goal from those moments – four shots on target and they scored three. Credit to them they deserved it and we didn’t on the night.

“We knew what was coming and that was the most disappointing and infuriating thing.

“We spoke about competing, the basics, running the duels, that’s what we always talk about before games, and they did that better than us in those moments.”

An honest assessment, the defending, from set-pieces was poor and, to be honest, apart from a spell when we were only 1-0 down, we never looked like making that 5th round trip to take on Nathan Jones and Southampton.

Naturally, on the back of such a crushing defeat, social media was alive with disappointed Luton fans all eager to express their disappointment:

I wouldn’t argue with that one, six changes from the side that beat Stoke City did seem strange, even if those players on loan couldn’t be selected.

Another had even harsher words to say:

Now it was only recently that we congratulated Rob Edwards on what he has achieved since taking over from Nathan Jones and we still have every faith in the gaffer, he may have got it a little wrong last night, with his team selection, but he’ll bounce back, this Saturday, against Coventry, mark my words!

Pathetic comments from some there. Yes sorry for the lads who spent hard earned cash getting there and the performance. Rob warned that ineligibility an injury meant that the team would be short. He has his eye on the main prize. See my previous post. Get over it an move on.

Agree, and also the number of commenters
in instant meltdown calling the team a disgrace and now laying into some players on one defeat, Horvath, Woodrow and Elliot to name a few.
Not entitled to turn up every game, not entitled to beat sides below us… Had some rotation, protected some legs, gave the youth a run and test in first team…
      Just one of those nights.

Going by Mr Conways comments, if he thinks that was the worst performance ever, I would suggest he ain’t been watching us very long…..its always the same, everyone is a manager when we lose. Their keeper stopped everything ours didn’t….we move on….League far more important. Rather take a 3.0 last nite, than on Saturday….

there goalie played a blinder. luton have done this to higher placed teams over the years, its what happens in cup games. lets move on and get some 1-0 wins in the league. wonder if shea should be given a game or two.? COYH.

Morning MH Sorry whilst understanding the need to rest some of the team surely the coaches would have seen what was going wrong midway in the first half. The midfield was being overrun and the full backs were not up to the task. This would have been the time to make changes and not wait until half time when it was too late. The club is always saying it never has enough money yet this game and the following at Southampton would have made a considerable contribution to funds. The manager should have apologised to those fans and the team refunded the fans ticket price at the very least.

Hatter 75, as has already been pointed out what’s £125,000 compared to the millions on offer if we get to Wembley or promoted. Also it gave the coaches time to look at other players in a game. This was valuable in assessing the future for us in getting promoted not a meaningless cup tie. Sorry for the fans who paid good money to see a poor show but as Alan said we’ve all seen worse.

  • Alan says:

This talk of refunds always amazes me. If you back a horse in the grand national & it falls at the 1st, do you go to the bookie & ask for refund….if you go to the cinema & the film is pants, would you want you money back…..
