Flicking between various news source, yesterday, I came across an interesting piece about a former Hatter.

In 2005, a certain Carlos Edwards came to Kenilworth Road, penning a three-year deal on what, at the time, was called a Bosman deal, with his contract at his previous club, Wrexham, having expired.

Edwards was to make, during his tenure with Luton, 68 league appearances and scoring 8 goals.

Such was his impact at the club, he was awarded the ‘Young Members Player of the Season’ in his first campaign as a Hatter.

His career with Luton ended on 02-January 2007 when Sunderland signed the Trinidad and Tobago international for a fee of £1.5 million.

Now that was over 16 years ago but, it seems, Carlos remains very active on the footballing front with the East Anglian Daily Times, reporting that at the age of 44, Carlos refuses to hang up his boots and has just signed for Hadleigh United, a Suffolk based non-league side.

However, our source also reports that Edwards is also employed by Ipswich Town in their Academy, a remarkable achievement considering his age.

When it comes to footballers, there appear to be two breeds – those that retire ahead of their time and those that just want to play on and on, with the phrase:

“You Are Long Time Retired”

instantly springing to mind.

Kudos to Carlos, a fine player and a superb advocate for the game we all love.
