Luton Linked With Defender Acquisition

With Matty Pearson having left Luton Town FC, it has not taken long for media speculation to link the Hatters with a replacement.

Late yesterday afternoon (Monday), the local Pompey media source, The News, was promoting the suggestion that the Hatters were targeting the Pompey centre-back, Jack Whatmough.

This was soon picked up on by another news source, Football League World adding to the speculation.

But what do we know about the 24-year-old?

Perhaps the most important point, in these pandemic driven financial times, is that he is available on a free transfer with his contract set to expire.

It also looks as if, after spending his career with Portsmouth, he may be wanting to test himself in the Championship, after Portsmouth failed to achieve promotion this season.

But there are also several negative points.

Firstly, Portsmouth wants to keep him and may tug at his heartstrings to convince him to sign a new contract but the second, and perhaps far more worrying, is that the defender has suffered three serious knee injuries during his career.

Last season Whatmough made 38 appearances in all competitions and scored 2 goals but do we really need him what with Sonny Bradley having decided to prolong his Hatters career and with Tom Lockyer and Kal Naismith, our preferred centre back pairing, all still with the Hatters?

Hi Alan, one of many players to be linked till the window shuts most likely.
Does anyone know how long Naismith’s contract was for when he signed ?
I keep hearing it was only a short-term deal till the end of the season, if so, hearing he’s signed a new contract would be very welcome news.

Hi all, I see from the early voting that the get rid of the defense boys are putting up a good show for getting him!! A risky injury prone lad with 3 serious knee injuries an only 1 full season completed in div1 through injuries that makes a lot of sense not!! Also on good wages do we want to risk Good money on him I think not!!!!

    Hi Chris,

Maybe the keep the defence boys need to smell the coffee, and I wasn’t aware that the voting also advised who voted?
But just maye the size of the vote shows it to be pretty conclusive?
But everyone is entitled to your opinion.
