Luton – 79 Is The Magic Number Or Is It?

Although the Hatters are very handily placed in 3rd place in the EFL Championship, I just can’t, with my inquisitive mind, stop doing the number crunching.

I think it is safe to say that the second automatic promotion place, currently occupied by Sheffield United, is out of our grasp, so exactly how many more points do we currently mathematically need to guarantee grabbing a play-off place?

Well, the EFL Championship table is currently as displayed below:

• Burnley – 87 points
• Sheffield United – 76 points
• Luton Town – 68 points
• Middlesbrough – 67 points
• Millwall – 62 points
• Blackburn Rovers – 61 points
• Norwich City – 60 points
• Preston North End – 59 points
• Coventry City – 58 points
• West Bromwich Albion – 56 points
• Sunderland – 55 points
• Watford – 55 points

Now assuming, for mathematical purposes, although it isn’t going to happen, every play-off chasing team wins each and every one of their games, the table would look as thus:

• Burnley – 108 points
• Sheffield United – 97 points
• Luton Town – ** points
• Middlesbrough – 85 points
• Blackburn Rovers – 82 points
• Millwall – 80 points
• Norwich City – 78 points
• Preston North End – 77 points
• Coventry City – 76 points
• West Bromwich Albion – 77 points
• Sunderland – 73 points
• Watford – 73 points

Luton currently have 68 points, but following the crazy mathematical avenue I’ve gone down, a total of 81 points would secure a top-six finish, meaning in this crazy mathematical world, Luton Town would need to take a minimum of 11 points from the last 18 available, with the six games left looking as thus:

• Blackpool (h)
• Rotherham United (a)
• Reading (a)
• Middlesbrough (h)
• Blackburn Rovers (a)
• Hull City (h)

But like I said, it is all a bit fictitious at the moment because, as we all know, not everyone of the top 12 teams is going to win every game, considering some have to play each other, but over the coming few games, it could be interesting to see that figure, I’ve quoted, of 79 points, tumble downwards quite dramatically!
