After a short gap between the last and the next in this series of articles, it is time to focus on Carlos Mendes Gomes.
Gomes was the signing the club announced last season with the player joining the Hatters, from Morecambe, on 26-June-2021 for an undisclosed fee.
Luton beat off several other clubs for the attackers’ signature and things looked to be rosy in the Hatters garden.
But Gomes was not to make the impact expected of him with the player making just 2 starts in Championship fixtures and a further 7 from the bench.
In other competitions, Gomes made a further 3 appearances and scored his only goal, for Luton, in the FA Cup tie against Cambridge United (a), in the 3-0 victory.
As for his discipline on the pitch, that could be deemed as immaculate with the player picking up 0 yellow or red cards.
But how would you classify Gomes first season with the club?

My view is that Mendes had a disappointing time, when he was signed, I don’t mind admitting, he was the one I was looking towards making the most impact.
Sadly, Mendes never got the run of games he perhaps needed to showcase his abilities. As for a reason why, only the management can give an answer.
Next season, 2022/2023, could be his defining season, a make-or-break season, whether he gets the chance to play on a regular basis remains to be seen.
As for the player himself, despite a lack of first team action, he, as this social media post shows, is happy with life at Luton:

Personally, after what may be described as a dream move, I’d have been hugely disappointed at how little a part I’d played.

Personally I can’t see the point of rating him. I’ve said in previous posts we saw so little of him it’s wrong to judge him. For whatever reasons management refused to play him on many occasions when he was probably needed. So it’s a disservice to him to do a poll. Let’s see if he gets a run next season then judge his worth.

Completely agree with Chris! As with Mad Hatter, Gomes was the one I was expecting to give us that edge last season. Hope he gets a run in the next. He and Fred could unlock defenses if on form.
