It`s Not a Drop Down!

The intimation, last week, that a centre back signing had been agreed, had us all guessing who it might be.

Yesterday we discovered that it was Garry Richards who Luton had signed.

Richards, before signing on the line, had played for Gillingham, although it is a step down to the Conference, Richards has come out with all the right words in an interview he gave to the official site.

Replacing George Pilkington will not be easy but Richards, if you read his comments, looks to be right up for the job, commenting on the aforementioned site,

‘I’m a rugged style centre-half. I love defending and getting in people’s faces.’

‘My job is to defend and, especially in the lower leagues, you are there to do the ugly part, the nitty-gritty and I can’t wait to start doing that next season.”

‘When you win a promotion it makes you even more hungry for another one and I believe I can do it again here.”

‘When you have that winning feeling you want to replicate it, and that’s one of the biggest reasons why I decided to come here – I want to be part of a successful team again.’

‘It’s difficult not to think twice about coming to a club like Luton Town.”

‘It’s great to be at a club steeped in history with a massive fan base, especially at these exciting times – the manager has already made some top signings and added to a squad already full of quality.”

‘Of course you have your own ambitions and you think what you can achieve at certain clubs. It doesn’t matter that the club aren’t in the Football League. What matters is getting back there.”

‘You don’t like seeing clubs like Luton drop out of the League but I am relishing helping them get back amongst the bigger boys again.’

We`ll settle for that and we`re grateful that the club seem to be stocking up with some decent players that should serve us well.

As far as Richards goes though; our only concern relates to that horrific broken leg, whereby he received a spiral fracture of the fibula in a game, for Gillingham, against Bristol City.

Hopefully the fracture won`t affect his play, especially so when he mentions he`s a rugged centre back!
