The Hatters stuttering recent form continued against Cambridge with the Hatters dropping two more points against a mid-table side.
That stutter in recent form has seen a healthy lead at the top of the League Two table slowly diminish.
What was once a very healthy lead is now just four points although if Accrington win their game in hand that lead will be cut to just one-point.
The game had started well for Luton who could have opened the scoring when a neat pull-back from Luke Gambin provided a chance for Olly Lee but his shot went the wrong side of the post.
However, two minutes later in the 33rd minute, the Hatters sent the travelling support wild with delight when they did open the scoring.
Danny Hylton, restored to the starting eleven, shot from the edge of the box and whilst the Cambridge keeper, David Forde, managed to keep the ball out, he could only parry it into the path of James Collins who turned the ball home.
Leading 1-0 was always going to be precarious for the Hatters and when James Collins got ruffled, receiving a yellow card for handball and then a second yellow card minutes later for dissent, the Hatters were reduced to ten-men for the last fourteen minutes of the game.
Cambridge United, unfortunately, took advantage of their man advantage and in the 83rd minute drew level when a cross from Brad Halliday was powerfully headed home by Jabo Ibehre, who had only been on the pitch for a couple of minutes.
Matters could have gotten worse for Luton when Cambridge, pushing for a winner, saw shots from both George Maris and Ibrehre blocked in a huge late goalmouth scramble.
