With there almost being a Gillingham theme to the site lately, what with the signings of Danny Spiller and Garry Richards, I thought I`d recall a trip to the Priestfield Stadium.
From what I recall, it was an encounter before the season had started, quite possibly in one of those much-fabled cup competitions that preceded the start of the season, almost Watney Cup-esque.
Anyway, on this occasion I`d booked to go on a club coach and was going to meet up with a group of friends down there. Firstly, it seemed to take an age to drive through the ‘Garden of England` to get there, and when we did the ground was as ramshackle as I can remember.
The away end was an open terrace and the toilet wasn`t much more than a hole in the ground with corrugated iron forced into the sides to keep a bit of privacy about it. Wandering around the terrace trying to find my friends I received a smack on the side of a head, after straying into a few local lads who were keen to make an impression on us visitors.
To cap it all I never did find those friends, their car had broken down just outside Luton, so I found out down the pub after and as for the result, I seem to remember we got royally stuffed, 3-0 I think it was.
Just another one of those days I suppose!
