This Luton Hero Does Not Deserve The Flack He Is Currently Getting

This Saturday, when the Hatters take on Sheffield Wednesday, I would say that there is more than a fair chance that Danny Hylton will be leading the line.

With James Collins out courtesy of a positive COVID-19 test and Harry Cornick’s availability dependent upon his recovery from the groin injury that kept him out against Millwall, Nathan Jones options, when it comes to strikers, are limited.

Ahead of the game, the support is growing for Sam Nombe to be given an opportunity – luton-support-say-it-is-time-to-play-sam-nombe-away-to-sheffield-wednesday – but if that does happen, we still expect Nombe to play alongside Hylton.

Not that long ago, here at Vital Luton Town, we ran an article relating to some criticism Hylton was getting from the Luton support, via social media – lutons-danny-hylton-criticised-by-hatters-support-but-is-it-justified-or-not – criticism that was still prevalent following the defeat at the hands of Millwall, as the following posts illustrate:

But, it seems, although he confesses to not reading social media posts, Nathan Jones is not too happy to see Hylton vilified with the gaffer, as reported by Luton Today, keen to point out the following:

“I don’t know what people are saying about Danny, I don’t read social media, but people need to remember what Danny Hylton has done for this club first and foremost, so he’s bought himself a little bit of respect, a hell of a lot of respect.

“Because trust me, when I came into this football club, there wasn’t the calibre of player of Danny Hylton in this football club, he was a catalyst for us to do superbly well.”

Indeed, you could question whether Luton would be where they are today without the 56 goals he has scored in 136 appearances.

Nathan, continuing to defend his striker, also pointed out that Danny has had a torrid time with injuries missing the back end of the 2018 / 2019 campaign and the first half of last season before further adding:

“Right now, he hasn’t played for a long time, got injured, did not play, wasn’t put in, so now he’s playing catch-up.

“When he gets rhythm, Danny Hylton is a Championship striker, trust me on that one.

“But Danny Hylton has done enough for this club to earn the respect of people.

“So give him a bit of slack because he will come good and when he does, the keyboard warriors, can then pipe down.”

Which, in my opinion, all makes perfect sense.

In those two defeats, Stoke City and Millwall, Hylton was starved of service and not once was he presented with a decent scoring opportunity.

At 31-years-of-age and with his last goal for Luton coming back on 23 March 2019, when Doncaster Rovers were beaten 4-0, the time is ripe for Danny to get back on the scoresheet this weekend.

If he does, I am sure those keyboard warriors will be silenced as Danny goes from zero to hero.

Hi mh, as I’ve said in a previous post. It’s my belief that nj is blinded by his loyalty to the old guard and wants Danny to score in the championship. I have no problem with that as such a loyal servant deserves it before he goes. But he is still not up to speed in my eyes. And the team needs freshening up but loyalty can go to far. I won’t be a critic of Danny as he has done so much for the club
