The Ups And Downs Of A Manic Weekend As A Luton Win Gives The Support Hope Of Championship Survival

When the referee, Andy Woolmer, blew the final whistle, on Saturday afternoon, after 10 minutes of stoppage time had been played, I’m sure I wasn’t the only Luton Town supporter to pump the air in delight.

The thumping header, in the 72nd minute, had been enough to give the Hatters a valuable win while also keeping our hopes alive of retaining our Championship status.

The win even moved the Hatters off the bottom of the table, with Barnsley only managing to draw at home to Millwall.

But, as the afternoon / weekend progressed it turned out winning at the Liberty Stadium was something that just had to be done to keep those dreams alive of staving off relegation.

For those teams around us, apart from Huddersfield Town and a Stoke City side who are dropping down the table and heading towards the drop zone, all picked up points.

Hull, with Birmingham left with nothing to play for, picked up a point at St Andrews.

Middlesbrough, after appointing Neil Warnock as their boss, picked up three valuable points on the road, at Stoke.

While Charlton and Wigan both picked up wins that helped put some distance between themselves and the relegation places.

With the television coverage focussing on who’ll climb out of the Championship and into the Premier League, it is fair to say that the relegation battle is proving to equally as exciting.

With seven games left there really is all to play for and I can’t wait for the next game which just happens to be against top of the table Leeds United.

Can the Hatters get anything from a game most of the media think they’ll get nothing from?

Hi mh, as you have mentioned results were up an down for us. As for Leeds we’ll to my mind they are the best team in the div an toughest. So I’m thinking if we can get a draw it would be a massive result. Looking at the games to come Barnsley an Huddersfield are now must win games. An points from others will possibly keep us up. Hull seem in free fall an catchable as long as we win against the two I mentioned

true, there are games coming up that are now must wins and we have to ensure we do. We can beat Barnsley, Hull and Huddersfield and I fancy our chances against QPR and Blackburn, the dream lives on! Our future really is in our own hands.

Hi mh, totally agree with you. As you know I was certain that we would be relagated. But now I believe that we can stay up. Jones seems to be healing the rifts in the dressing room good thing. An players seem uplifted so I will have to polish my grovelling boots ready for Alan!!!

Hi all, Chris you don’t have to grovell bud, it’s all opinions. Had we lost our last 2 games you would have been right….lets all enjoy the ride & hope we can show the fight that has returned and get a result 2more…

Hi Alan, it wasn’t an opinion. It was a belief from the start of the season that gj was a disaster waiting to happen. My many posts stemmed from that belief and my warnings about him. Although I got slated in some quarters. I believe now that we have a 60/40 chance of staying up. An although I was undecided about njs return he is making a difference. Some will say oh but under gj before lock down we were improving. And this is just carrying that on an njs has been lucky. This is not so I am hearing that the mood in the players camp an training is 100% better. That’s down to mh, af, an nj.

  • Alan says:

I’m hearing that too. Smiles have returned. Even if the worst happens I think NJ & co will have the ability to build a side to compete at the top of league 1.

  • Chris winter says:

Hi Alan, I don’t have any doubt that if we are relegated. Then next season we will easily win div 1.and we could do it with the players already here. And I am in no doubt what so ever that this seasons mess is down to one thing only bad management an tactics.
