The loan system has always intrigued me.

I see it as an ideal opportunity to bring somebody to the club for one of two reasons;

1 – To give a highly-rated youngster the chance to shine.

Or

2 – To gauge how a player will fit into your squad before making a decision as to whether to make a permanent move for the player.

However, I do feel that, sometimes, the system is abused.

Take the current Premier League leaders Chelsea, currently, they have in excess of 40 players out on loan, to a variety of clubs spread throughout the English leagues and across Europe.

Surely that can’t be right, surely there should be a limit on numbers.

Here at Luton, on Saturday, we were unfortunate enough to see Luton’s latest loan signing, Eunan O’Kane, pick up a horrendous injury after coming on as a substitute against Bristol Rovers.

O’Kane, as the club confirms in the following tweet

has had his leg reset in an operation at the local hospital.

But, and here’s another point I find a little strange, Eunan will now return to his parent club to continue his long rehabilitation.

To me, that still strange, almost a case of thanks for letting us have him but now he’s broken we’re sending him back.

Obviously, I can see the sense in it with the parent club wanting to look after their charge, but I can’t help likening it to somebody buying something and then taking it back when its broke, but that’s just me.

However, I’d like you to join me in offering Eunan a speedy recovery, as some of the Hatters players have:
