Should Luton Town Supporters Fear The Worst?

A dramatic headline but one that, I am afraid to say, gave me a sleepless night.

These truly are worrying times, the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect our way of life, some people are suggesting it may take years for life to return to normal.

Meanwhile, as the politicians do what they perceive to be their utmost to guide us through troubled times, the thorny subject of if, or when, the EFL Championship season might continue.

We are already resigned to the fact that if it does resume then fixtures will be played behind closed doors, a surreal experience I thought I would never experience in my lifetime.

But while those in charge continue to dilly-dally, it has to be stated that every day clubs are deprived of any income, even if it would be minimal due to the behind-closed-doors scenario, the danger increases that they will fold.

Supporters have been quick to suggest that the Premier League clubs should bail their less-wealthy cousins out.

Sadly, the Premier League has problems of its own, boosted by exorbitant TV funds, there is the likelihood of a massive refund having to be found with it being common knowledge that some clubs have spent the cash already.

During the boom period, I always had this nagging suspicion that the bubble may burst one day, although I never suspected it would come about because of a pandemic.

Down at Kenilworth Road, I’m sure every step is being taken to cut costs, staff have been furloughed (as has been the case for so many businesses across the UK), the manager and some of his backroom staff have been axed and we are led to believe the squad will be trimmed down, all necessary measures to ensure the club survives.

We can all only hope that those wonderful people who have done so much to stabilise our fine club after the mess previous owners let it drift into, can weather the storm, the loss of our football club would be a devastating blow to the town.

But should we prepare for the worst?

As mentioned earlier, last night I had a rude awakening, I set off for the match, convinced everything was normal, but on arriving at Kenilworth Road I was greeted by gates locked with chains, paint peeling and overgrown weeds.

Only when I woke up in a cold sweat did I realise it had all been a bad dream, a bit like this COVID-19 pandemic that continues to affect us all.

Lets hope we continue to play out the season behind closed doors. Not this stupid idea of so called professionals guessing the results of each game.

What happened to those larger clubs who were supposed to lose points due financial irregularities?
It seems these larger clubs can get away with no penalty unlike poor old Luton who in the past been relegated due to in deducted points.

More to life than football. Hate to say it but stop the season now and go average points. The table doesn’t lie and is the only fair way to do it.

I still think that the season should be finished now; with no promotions or relegations , the idea of some group of “ supposed experts “ deciding a clubs future for next season “ whenever that may be “ is ridiculous , who can say a team can’t suddenly hit a rich vein of form and others have a bad run , football is “ very unpredictable “ at the best of times , I know as they have previously , the lads would play their hearts out for our “ stand in manager “ , he has a way of motivating the team that gets results. Relying on others guessing who they think should go down is wrong . Plus this would give clubs across the board to sort things out and that little bit of time might just mean more clubs surviving .
