Last night was one of those unique nights where Luton Town Football Club had a good night without actually playing.

The Tuesday night action saw the Hatters three main promotion rivals, Barnsley, Portsmouth and Sunderland all play.

However, only Sunderland can be pleased with the outcome of their fixture.

The Black Cats comprehensively beat Gillingham 4-2, to take the three points on offer, but although Sunderland still have a game in hand over the Hatters, they are 9 points adrift.

Barnsley, who sit just below the Hatters in second place in the table, entertained Burton Albion and would have been hopeful of continuing recent run of fine form, however, they couldn’t get that vital breakthrough and Burton Albion defended resolutely to take a share of the spoils with a 0-0 draw. The result sees Barnsley 5 points adrift of the Hatters with both teams having played the same number of games.

Lastly, Portsmouth, who have suffered a major downturn in form, since Boxing Day, entertained Bristol Rovers and had to rely on a late-equaliser to snatch a point in a 1-1 draw. The fixture leaves Portsmouth, who had a healthy lead at the top of the League One table not that long ago, 10 points of the pace and having played the same number of games as Luton.

This Saturday lunchtime, Luton Town welcome Coventry City, to Kenilworth Road, for a lunchtime kick-off covered live by Sky Sports, if the Hatters can eek out another victory you can’t help thinking that the club will have taken another giant step towards back-to-back promotions.
