Okay, far from being down by the seaside weather, it was actually freezing cold at Southend yesterday as the Hatters took the three points on offer with a narrow victory.

Arriving early, it was impossible to resist the chance to stroll along the seafront although its fair to say it doesn’t look so appealing in January as it does in the summer months.

Venturing into Roots Hall to join the other 2,000 Hatter supporters who had made the trip, we were confident that Mick Harford could keep our long unbeaten run, in the league, going and that is exactly what happened.

The Hatters won 1-0, thereby extending their unbeaten run to the longest it has been since 1969, as the club looks to achieve back-to-back promotion campaigns.

The winning goal came in the 29th minute when a corner from Justin James was delicately headed home by Matt Pearson.

The Hatters had further chances to double their lead, most notably when a low volley from Sonny Bradley had to be turned away by the Southend keeper, Nathan Bishop.

Southend rarely threatened the Hatters goal although the away support were grateful to see James Shea turn aside a long-range effort from Simon Cross late in the game.

The result lifts Luton to the top of the table and, on Tuesday evening, we welcome second in the table, Portsmouth, to Kenilworth Road, for a crunch League One fixture.
