After an imperious run of form had seen Luton Town open-up a four-point lead at the top of League Two, the Hatters faithful made the trip to the Potteries expecting their side to take the three points on offer and maintain their charge towards promotion.

Unfortunately, that wasn`t to be case with the wheels coming off the Luton bandwagon in spectacular style.

The Hatters fell behind in the twenty-third minute when the Vale player Whitfield burst into the box and his cross was diverted into his own net by Dan Potts.

However, going in a goal down at half-time wasn`t the end of the world as Luton had the second-half to put matters right.

Sadly on the hour mark, Vale doubled their lead when a pass from Whitfield found Pope and his effort beat the despairing dive of Stech.

Two goals behind, matters got worse in the seventieth minute when Pope fond Whitfield who had the easy job of turning the ball home.

The Hatters misery was completed in the eighty-second minute when Pope scored his second goal of the game stabbing home the loose ball after a goalmouth scramble.

A bad day at the office for the Hatters who, thankfully, still remain four points clear at the top after Notts County were beaten by Swindon Town.

Next up for the Hatters is a home fixture with Lincoln City on New Years Day.
