Mike Newell has tipped tricky winger Ahmet Brkovic to shine on the international stage should he picked to represent Croatia.

The 31 year old has continued the form that saw him named in the League One Team of the Year last term and with Croatia preparing for the World Cup finals Newall has no doubts that Brko would rise to the challenge if given the opportunity.

‘Brko’s got ability, we always believed that if he goes up a level he can play with better players,’ Newell told Sky Sports News.

‘Certainly if there’s any chance of him playing for the international side, no disrespect to our lads, he’d be playing with top players. We feel he is one of those who could go on and go on.’

‘It would be a dream come true,’ said Brkovic. ‘I’m 31, it would just be a dream come true, I would be the happiest man. I just want to work hard and play the best for Luton and if that happens like I say that would be a dream come true.’

Brkovic is not the only one with World Cup aspirations. Trinidad and Tobago star Carlos Edwards could be in line for the play-off with Bahrain if his country are to claim a place in Germany.

‘Even though we have a capacity of 1.6 million people I think we would get a bit more recognition,’ said Edwards.

‘Dwight (Yorke) has put our name on the map a bit and going to the World Cup in the summer, the country would be buzzing.’
