Kevin Blackwell is likely to rest some of the recent first choice players for tonight’s clash with Sunderland in the Carling Cup.

Paul Furlong, David Edwards and Darren Currie are all likely to be given a break after a busy start to the season. Currie’s wife has given birth to a child and he will no doubt appreciate the down time.

Luton have been given permission by Cardiff to play loan keeper David Forde in the match, allowing Dean Brill more time to recover from his thigh strain.

Don Hutchison may get the nod as Edwards’ replacement and Calvin Andrew may also get a rare start.

Kevin Blackwell said: ‘It’s a difficult one because we’ve got big games coming up left, right and centre.

‘We go to Elland Road on Saturday and they (Leeds) are currently on a roll.

‘When you look at some of our players, Dave Edwards has played something like 12 games in six weeks.

‘He’s played week in week out during the pre-season and was also away with Wales last week so that’s something I will have to look at.

‘But the last thing I want is to be disrespectful to a Premier League club. We want to put out a team, but we also have to look at the bigger picture.’

Sunderland will be without Kieran Richardson and Dean Whitehead, and Carlos Edward’s is unlikely to feature as he has a hamstring injury.

Russell Anderson, Roy O’Donovan, Darren Ward, Graham Kavanagh, Stanislav Varga, David Connolly and Grant Leadbitter should all be available.
