In what was another interesting feature, here at Vital Luton Town, we can finally reveal who made your top five.
The original article – the-great-manager-debate-starts-here – prompted by Tony Byfield provided an intriguing response and I am now able to reveal the results.
So, without much further ado, here are the top 5 managers, as voted for by you, our readership:
1 – David Pleat
2 – Rob Edwards
3 – Mick Harford
4 – Harry Haslam
5 – John Moore
With the following receiving honourable mentions:
• Alec Stock
• Allan Brown
• Lennie Lawrence
• Joe Kinnear
• John Still
• Dally Duncan
• Nathan Jones
• Jimmy Ryan
• Ray Harford
Several of our readership bemoaned the fact that Dally Duncan was not in my prompt list, but, as I explained in the original article, the prompt list only contained the names of those who have managed the Hatters during my time as a supporter.
Hopefully, the publication of the following article – taking-a-look-at-the-career-of-dally-duncan – appeased those who contacted me.
But what are your feelings relating to the top 5, does the list get your approval or would you contest it?
Please feel free to have your say in the comment facility beneath this article.

Ray Harford only an honourable mention???
What a travesty.
I’m not arguing, i only reported the results!
Rob Edwards? Were all the votes by 1 season 12 year olds?
My top 5 would have been – Pleat, Moore, Ray Harford, Haslam and Stock
John Moore’s claim to fame was a seventh place finish in Division 1, a great achievement but hardly compares with the records of Nathan Jones or John Still and where their legacies put us.
Good point!
Good
John still and Nathan Jones have to be in top 4 with pleat and Edwards
Harford is god as player and in boardroom but noway can he be above Jones or Still as a manager
Seems about right to me except would have John Still instead of John Moore.
I disagree on the priority as our midfield is poor at the moment especially if Alan Campbell goes. What we really lack is goal scoring midfielders. Luke Berry scored 13 Championship Goals for us in the past. Who will replace him?
John Moore played 276 games for Luton from 4th to second division and was First team coach under David Pleat before taking the reins as manager, reaching our highest ever league position. Pleat would never have been so successful without Moore as coach. He certainly deserves to be up there and he resigned as he did not feel management was what he wanted to do. And he still goes to our matches and is always a gentleman and speaks whenever I acknowledge him… although even after almost 60 years, I still don understand a word of what he says! 😉 Legend. As much as Big Mick is THE legend of the club, even he would not suggest that he was a great manager. Scout, definitely; player, absolutely; clubman, undeniably; coach, very probably; manager… not so much. Jones was/is a very good manager and one of the best we have had, but unfortunately a ‘great’ has to have an element of clubmanship and loyalty and he fell over a cliff in that department not once but twice. Edwards has the potential to be the greatest but it’s a long journey to that accolade not a short sprint. Still did a great job at his level and then admitted he was out of his depth. Honourable resignation. Ray Harford should be up there alongside Harry Haslam in the top echelons. So for me it has to be…. John Moore.
