Luton Town – When Banter Almost Crosses The Line

Last night, to their enormous credit, 1344 Sunderland fans were inside Kenilworth Road cheering on their side.

As it turned out, they left the ground happier than the Hatters support, with the Black Cats having taken the three points on offer.

Most of the visiting supporters, to attend the game, would have had to travel 250 miles each way, quite an achievement for a midweek fixture.

Naturally, they vociferously cheered on their side and engaged in banter with the Hatters support and also felt obliged to sing the obligatory chants mocking our ground and town, nothing original there chaps.

But, following the final whistle, numerous Black Cat supporters felt the need to mock our club and its achievements in recent years, quite why I’m not sure, but I reckon they’re still feeling the pain of the Play-Off defeat we inflicted upon them back in the 2022/2023 season.

Now I’m not going to go off majorly on one about their lack of class, or publish the posts previously mentioned, but instead query why the good old fixture computer still churns out these long midweek trips for loyal football supporters, indeed, it doesn’t seem long ago that we all headed off to Plymouth for a Friday night fixture.

Surely the famous old fixture computer can be programmed to keep midweek fixtures regularly close, geographically!

Earlier in this article, I mentioned the Sunderland supporters who felt it necessary to use social media to play keyboard warriors, but lurking amongst all the dross, there are a couple of posts recognising what our football club is all about:

Cheers lads, your posts are greatly appreciated.

So again its two lines on fixture stupidityyes Sunderland here on a Wednesday night, us Plymouth on a Friday; this is something l have been raising for years. With our and other Supporters Trusts, the media in various ways, persons at the FA and League and only ever receive words of understanding and sympathy but nothing ever happens. How can we supporters make it happen? We need a coordinated and sustained campaign to enable change but who is influential enough to do so. There are plenty of politicians and celebrities out there who follow football, how can we get them to unite, get the players themselves support and stand up to the clubs the League and the FA and say, enough is enough, without us, you are nothing.
