Luton Town – Time For A Change Defensively

It is the time of the year where I’d usually have a bitch regarding the first international break interrupting our season.

After all, we’re a mere four games into it and it has come to a dramatic halt.

But this year is different, I’m actually glad that there is a break as, for once, we need time to reflect and work out a plan forward.

Just a solitary 1 point from the 12 available is not the start I, or many others, anticipated would occur.

But it has, and the international break gives us the perfect opportunity to reset and go again, looking towards the forty-two games left to produce a run to get promoted.

Our poor start has seen many a gripe from the support, many have questioned as to whether we need to adjust our game plan.

Many are of the opinion that playing a back-three isn’t working, suggesting that other coaches have sussed us out and the inference is that we should switch to a flat back-four.

My view is that it would tighten up the defence, giving us proper defensive cover on the flanks whilst also, hopefully, cutting out the long through balls that have troubled us so much.

I’d also like to see more variety when it comes to corners and set-pieces, surely there are others, apart from Alfie Doughty, that are capable of delivering the ball into the box and offer some variety!

I’ve just touched on two aspects of our play that I reckon need changing or adjusting, but what are your feelings on the subject matter?

teams in the premier sussed out our method of play and exploited it. now its happening again. whatever system you use , its the players that have to step up. we have got great players to choose from now, lets hope they remain injury free. would like to see someone else but doughty take corners and free kicks. its like we are stuck in a groundhog day scenario. lets see if krauss can give us something different.COYH.

I don’t see the problem as a defensive issue. Our midfield is too easy to play through at present and we are giving the ball away too easily in our own half. We still seem to be looking for Barkley as our out ball but he’s warming a bench at Villa!

Once Nakamba is back and if he can stay fit, I think some of the defensive concerns will ease.

The intensity in our press has vanished, used to push and squeeze in dangerous as a group and everyone looked like they knew their place at the right time in each match…. now we seem to have a solitary striker tiring themselves out chasing whilst the midfield let runners drop off of them and we are too easily carved open.
We look soft in challenges and duels and the overall intensity doesn’t feel.as it used to…
Looking forward to the team gelling and settling on a core and then seeing how we progress, not panicking overly but have to acknowledge it’s an extremely poor start…

Totally agree about defense, what about the strike partnership?

I’ve never believed that Morris and Adebayo work together. Our best spell last season was when Elijah played with Brown. When Morris goes wide he disappears from the game and we’re effectively playing with 10 men. They’ve both been poor this season and I think RE has been too reluctant to change it up front.

Need to go 4-4-2 with a midfield of krauss baptiste Walsh nelson until nakamba fully fit then add nakamba for nelson.

  • Tim says:

We need to shoot more! For the last couple of seasons the reluctance to shoot from outside the box has become a joke.
