Luton Town – The Joe Taylor Conundrum Continues To Raise Its Head

I know we all think, sometimes, we have the acumen to manage a team, how often have you aired your opinion, during a game, relating to a substitution?

I’ll admit, I’ve, often bellowed out a suggestion, only to be proven wrong.

A typical example being when Sunderland took the lead against Luton, on Wednesday night, I screamed at Edwards to change things up but, lo and behold, he didn’t and minutes later we’d got back to 1-1.

But while we all have our own views on what susbstitutions, and when, a common thread I read across social media relates to one player – Joe Taylor.

Once again, yesterday, Rob chose to ignore Taylor instead bringing on Cauley Woodrow, something he’d also done on Wednesday night, although to be fair Rob did give Taylor the opportunity to impress, against Sunderland, bringing him on for the five minutes of stoppage time.

It’s almost as if, despite Joe topping the scoring charts at TWO clubs last season, Colchester United and Lincoln City, Rob has little or no faith in Taylor.

To me, when things are not going right, as has been the case on many an occasion this season, Joe is the ideal player to bring on, different in stature to those who have tried before and with enough pace to trouble defenders.

The infrequent use of Taylor suggests, to me, that he’ll be moved on, in the January transfer window (if Edwards is still in the managerial hot-seat) and we’ll be left to view from afar as he scores for fun at a new club.

But what are your views on the subject matter, have I hit the nail on the head or am I wide of the mark?

It would appear mh that the altercation between either Joe or his agent and rob before the start of the season goes far deeper than I imagined as it seems to me we have another deeper problem with both of them just like Jones had with you know who and rob will bomb him out in January and don’t expect to see much of Taylor in games it seems Edwards won’t put the club first and try to settle things with Taylor. Yot can see by Taylor’s demeanor on the bench that he just wants a fair crack at Luton and is frustrated by Edwards attitude.

I was shouting at the tv to bring on Taylor, and instead we got Brown and Woodrow, neither have ever made much of an impact.
Taylor is a proven goalscorer and deserves a chance.
There is something seriously lacking in the squad and management. The spirit from recent years has evaporated and good players have dropped a level..
Time for changes in line ups and tactics, we are far too predictable.
A good result onFriday night is essential.

According to local news up here he’s off to Huddersfield 2M in January which seems to be reality as he is obviously not in Edward’s plans 🤷‍♂️

💯 I just don’t get it!! I don’t care if he has an attitude or a bad trainer just give him 4 games from the start not matter how he plays and I guarantee he will score!! RE seems to be too friendly with his players and in my opinion he has got this 1 wrong. Our system is far too rigid and we are very predictable to play against. Same lump forward same free kick and corner taker!!! Just mix it up. He is walking head on into the sack and it’s his own fault he enough staff behind him and yet they can’t see where our problems lie. Worrying

be careful what you wish for. changing manager still leaves the same players. players have got to step up. they must get sharper. should you try young players, of course you should, but maybe wages paid to some players ,dictates there place in the team. i like the look of holmes, but will he be another danny hylton with the cards. lets hope the next team we put out, has the grit and determination they need, to get some points ,and rise up the table. It is clear to most LT supporters that RE is at a total loss as to what to do next. How the board came to the decision to offer him a FOUR year deal is beyond me. The cost to the club in sacking him will be softened somewhat by a manager that understands the game of football and manages to keep us in the championship.
Why there is a reluctance on Edwards part to play Joe Taylor I have no idea, it is clear to the majority of the fanbase that he is the obvious choice. I feel we will lose him in January if he doesn’t get game time.
A new manager would have around 8-10 weeks to gauge our quality and to decide who we need to keep and more importantly, who we need to offload.

There seems to be a complete lack of cohesive thinking. Tactically lost. No real leadership on the field, we are missing Tom Lockyer more than anticipated. Twice in half a dozen games 2-0 up at half-time with no real clue how to hang on, similar to last year. Then a substitute arrives and with 30 seconds a double footed charge gets him sent off. 2 minutes into injury time another player sent off for shirt tugging. this seems like brain deadness to me! Instead of trying to take the blame RE needs to be stronger and tougher and less biased about players and tactics

As ive said Eric there was a problem between Taylor or his agent with Edwards before the season started and that information came from within the club so not to be dismissed. It would seem Edwards holds a grudge and can’t put the club before his feelings.

  • Mick says:

I agree with all the comments play the young man a full game forget the wing back system play four at the back four midfield two forwards

  • Kenny Ames says:

Joe Taylor’s future looks to be intrinsically linked to Edward’s future. If RE departs pre January window he could get his opportunity and may still have a future here, but if he is here in January I think Taylor will be leaving

  • STEF MUZZ says:

    How bizarre this is..
JOE TALYOR is a prolific goal scorer and we don’t play him…He is the only 20 plus a season striker we have!!….So we are now in the relegation zone of the Championship…Won a paltry 9 out of the last 50 games…Please an someone at Luton Town WAKE UP and find out what’s going on!!
PS…I have been supporting the Hatters since 1968 and Joe is as good as striker i have seen at Kenilworth Road…Give him a few games and let him do his thing….SCORE GOALS!! ⚽️⚽️⚽️

  • Terry says:

Joe Taylor should have come on Saturday and not Brown. Just give the kid a game or two to prove his self or let him go and you would see who is right

  • Mark says:

I think there are several things going on. Rob obviously relished the PL season and the players that did something (anything) last season can do no wrong by him now. Hence Elijah gets automatically selected and Woodrow is soon seen as the ultimate impact sub – all based on last season’s cameos.

But the injury crisis was hardly Rob’s fault and losing Tom is a huge blow. Basing our play around Barkley was a great move, at the time. I think Rob thinks he can just slot another Barkley-like player in and go again.

I think he recognises that his choices are costing us points. On Saturday, Coventry realised that they could pass the ball to Binks, he would push on unopposed and an attack around the edge of our area would usually result. To watch that a dozen times and not do something about it betrays a frazzled mind. And our 2nd half performance was a cut & paste of earlier dire matches.

One pre-season rumour was that Woodrow was subject to a large bid from lower down the leagues. Some times the best business is to take the money and run.
