Yesterday, it was reported that a true Luton Town legend, Ron Baynham had passed away aged ninety-four.
Although Ron’s career came before I was born, I have always been interested in the goalkeeping brigade, at Kenilworth Road.
My love coming after I adopted the position, as a youngster, and went on to star for the school team before the chance to earn some cash, via an evening paper round ended that particular route to possible stardom.
But I can recall my late father telling me about Ron and how he kept the Hatters in many a game with his prowess between the posts.
Ron, at the time of his death, held the record as the oldest surviving former England international, a mantle now passed on to somebody else.
He was also the last surviving member of the Luton Town 1959 FA Cup Final side alongside – Brendan McNally, Ken Hawkes, John Groves, Syd Owen, Dave Pacey, Billy Bingham, Allan Brown, Bob Morton, George Cummins and Tony Gregory.
