Back in December, before all the January transfer window madness commenced, I’d never have suggested that one of those who has left us would do so.
After all, hadn’t Tom Holmes only just recently joined the club, from Reading?
But with numerous new faces joining Luton Town, was it a case of having to reduce numbers and, at the last knocking, maybe having to sacrifice somebody who may not have been, originally, a candidate to leave?
This morning, back tracking after opting to hit my pit early, I find, courtesy of Luton Town’s X site that Tom Holmes has, temporarily left the club:
Good luck in Belgium, Holmesy! 👊
— Luton Town FC (@LutonTown) February 3, 2025
With Holmes having joined the Belgian club, FC Dender EH, on loan for the remainder of the 2024/2025 season.
Ashamedly, I have to admit I’d not heard of the reference club but, apparently, they play in the top-flight of Belgian football.
But what surprises me is that with so many central defenders injured, or susceptible to injury, we’ve allowed one who remains available for selection, to leave.
Could it have been a case of, when it comes to squad size, letting Tom leave was a viable option as the deadline approached?

Luton Town – Striker Journeys North For Loan Spell
Bloomer has commented that Burke is close to fitness. I don’t feel Holmes has been any worse than any other players in defence so it is a strange one on the other hand we have johnson and missoko both under age who don’t have to be registered in the squad availability for the rest of the season it’s the only reason I can think of for the decision.
I have never rated Holmes and am not sorry to see him go but Andersen isn’t much better and injury prone. Unfortunately selling players at the moment is a non starter because no one will buy most of them. Lets hope the new influx makes us a successful and entertaining club again. At least the new blood can give us optimism.
looking forward to see makossa play. hope he gets a chance. hope these new players cheers people up a bit. COYH.
Can’t say I’m sorry to see him go not good enough at this level defence still worrying especially the full backs
I think he must have has some sort of row with the manage perhaps over the mistakes he made at Oxford and being dropped since, I agree this is worrying with mengi and Burke both out and Anderson and Naismith both having legs made of china, hope it doesn’t come back to bite us on the arse
I think this loan will come back to haunt us. He stays fit, he doesn’t have a nosebleed when he receives the ball and can pass. He isn’t the quickest but positionally he is good and knows when to press and when to stand off. He also puts his body on the line for blocks etc.
